Anngie's best music of 2009

Indie-rock dominated my MP3 player this year (Animal Collective, Phoenix, XX, The Horrors). "Fame Monster" Lady Gaga's catchy, Madonna-inspired pop beats made a suprisingly #1 fan out of me. Festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo brought forward some of my all-time childhood favorite bands to rock my world from the likes of Echo the Bunnymen, Jane's Addiction, My Bloody Valentine, and Depeche Mode. And, thankfully, next year is shaping up to be just as equally exciting with new music from indie-rock(and dance) titans Yeasayer, Hot Chip, Spoon, MGMT, Battles, These New Puritans, LCD Soundsystem and the Klaxons (need i say more?). But, for now, I'd like to highlight some of the best albums to date. Every track on this list is an essential must have for any DJ or fan of good music.

Best albums, and the best song on each one

10. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's: It's Blitz "Runaway"

9. Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion "My Girls"

8. Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix -"1901"

7. XX xx "Crystalised"

6. Amanda Blank: I Love You "A Love Song"

5. Horrors Primary Colours "Three Decades"

4. Fever Ray: Fever Ray "Seven"

3. Sonic Youth: The Eternal "Antenna"

2. Simian Mobile Disco Temporary Pleasures "Cruel Intentions" feat. Beth Ditto

1. Depeche Mode – Sounds of the Universe "Wrong"

Best album title

Worst album cover

Spiral Stairs: The Real Feel (Matador)

Band I am surprised I learned to love

Lady Gaga

And, this is why!

Band I can now love in public

Lady Gaga

Best new artist

Miike Snow

Best Live Act

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's

Best music video

Matt Kim: Lessons Learned (directed by Taylor Cohen and Otto Arsenault)

Best weird music video

Major Lazer: Keep It Goin' Louder (directed by Eric Wareheim)

Does the holiday season start before Thanksgiving, as of Thanksgiving, or after Thanksgiving?

Here at MP3.com, the Thanksgiving holiday, at least, starts right about now, which means we'll be out of the office until Monday, December 1. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Labor Day Holiday, Monday Sept 1

While the rest of the world traditionally celebrates Labor Day in May, we in the U.S. like to do things a little differently, and celebrate in September. This means that Monday, September 1, the MP3.com staff will be out of the office, celebrating the last hurrah of summer, and wearing white while we still can. Business will be back to usual on Tuesday.

Have a safe long weekend everybody!

Fourth of July

Friday is the Fourth of July, and and the TV.com staff will be celebrating with plenty of fireworks and barbecues. Since fire codes prevent us from setting off fireworks or barbecuing inside the building, we won't be in the office. Business will be back to usual on Monday!

Have a safe long weekend everybody!

Memorial Day Weekend and brief scheduled maintenance

Hey everyone! The MP3.com staff will be commemorating the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 26, and won't be in the offices. We'll be back on Tuesday! Also, the site will be undergoing some maintenance in the wee hours of Tuesday morning (May 27), from 1-3 am PDT. During this time, all users will be treated as logged out, which means no blogging, forum posting, etc., but you should still be able to see access and read all areas of the site. Sorry for the inconvenience!

EDIT: The maintenance is done. Thank you for your patience. -Teivan

SafetySuit Sweepstakes: Win a Nintendo Wii!

SafetySuit is set to release their debut album, Life Left to Go, on May 13 through Universal Motown. Produced by Greg Archilla (Buckcherry, Collective Soul, Matchbox 20), Life Left to Go features the first single "Someone Like You" -- a powerful track with a massive hook that is already rocking at radio. The Nashville based band is comprised of Doug Brown (vocals, rhythm guitar), Dave Garofolo (guitar), Jeremy Henshaw (bass) and Tate Cunningham (drums).

To celebrate the release of Life Left to Go, SafetySuit and Socialush.TV are hooking up one lucky winner with a Nintendo Wii Mario Prize Pack (Nintendo Wii, NEW Mario Kart Wii, and Mario Party 8) and a signed copy of the album. In order to qualify for this opportunity, you must answer one quick trivia question about the band. Watch the EPK video by clicking the below banner to find the answer and enter. Contest ends May 23rd. Good luck!

Sheryl Crow is a rocker; Songs from Juno

Sheryl Crow is getting back to the music, and our own Jim Welte got to pick her brain in an exclusive MP3.com Interview podcast (don't worry, we've got it in old-fashioned print-form as well).

The Oscars are coming up at the end of the month, and of course the indie-flick and soundtrack everyone is buzzing about is Juno. Check it out for yourself with our FREE streams of select songs from the soundtrack.

2007 MP3.com Staff Picks

MP3.com will be taking a break for the holidays, but we'll be back in full swing come January 2, 2008 (well, maybe not full swing... some of us might still be shaking off the egg nog and confetti). We'll be checking in every now and then to make sure things are functioning in our absence, but please understand that any messages or requests to staff or the site will take some extra time.

But lest you feared you would be on your own wading through this year's glut of musical offerings, vainly attempting to find the good, the bad, the MP3.com Editor-worthy, we've got one last feature for you before leaving 2007 in the dust. Check out our 2007 MP3.com Staff Picks, featuring your favorite MP3.com staffers waxing poetic on their top five albums of the year. Enjoy!
