For those who don't know the Toy Dolls, this video disc, Our Last DVD?, is a wonderful introduction. Produced and directed by Dave Meehan with a lengthy interview conducted by Jet Martin, the same team who put together G.B.H.'s Charged: Onstage, Ian Hunter & the Rant Band's Just Another Night and other discs from Secret Films/Music Video Distributors, there's plenty of material for hardcore fans of Michael "Olga" Algar's Olga persona and "their" music. The 40-minute-plus interview from January 2005 was conducted in Camden, London and has plenty of insightful commentary from Olga. There's also 39 minutes of "On the Road" which features rehearsals, hotel rooms, dressing room, and general day-in-the-life footage, which is always fun. The impromptu practices work well for those who like eavesdropping on a pop/punk trio hard at work. Olga's guitar playing is a lot more precise and creative than one would expect from what is essentially a punk rock group. He's got the chops to keep the material pop, and the energy is boundless. As on other Secret Films discs the "bootleg" video is a real treat, camera shots that are less traditional make for more of that "bird's eye" view so appealing to fans. There are lots of songs here as well as a biography and a very cool, 120-second "photo tour." Olga and the boys have a penchant for taking their shirts off throughout concerts and rehearsals, the singer parading his youthful image for the camera and the heavily male audience. Rather than a "last" DVD, this plays more like a full-length electronic press kit and is bound to bring in more fans.
