The next step in the evolutionary chart of experimental, instrumental hip hop, Thisish Vol.1 Hosted by Large Professor strikes each of the human emotions in one sitting. Ranging from head-spin, party music like “Large Profressor Got Heat!” or that feel good, warm Friday afternoon cruising music on “Daydream” to introspective reflection tunes like “Outsect” or “Cloak & Swagger.” Possibly one of the greatest intro tracks ever recorded, “The Name of Thisish” perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album with just the right amount of anticipation generating buildups and breakdowns. The album also includes themes reflective of a seventies Blaxpoitation car chase scenes like in “2mg Strut” or the politically charged “Runnin’ Away” which reverberates discontent with the current White House administration. Listening to the intricacy and attention to detail on Thisish’s first release gives only an idea of the countless hours spent in the studio, basking in the glow of computer screens, behind turntables and pounding the pads of beat machines. Similar to, but branching away from the sub-genre of glitch or blip hop, the sound of producers Marshall Law, Cresh Frazy Johnny 5 and DJ Masa have developed a signature style unto their own.
