George Mitchell

Not to be confused with the George Mitchell who puckered up to a cornet on Jelly Roll Morton's classic recordings, the bassist of the same name hails from Montreal and has played in a rhythm section with brilliant drummer Cindy Blackman, among other settings. Chris Potter, Jacky Terrasson, and the late Joe Henderson have also performed with this bassist, certainly not the only other instrumentalist who happens to be named thusly. In 2002 bassist Mitchell relocated to New York City, doubtlessly running into more players named George Mitchell and closing out certain highly praised Canadian collaborations such as the Jefferson Grant Quintet. This ensemble dates back to the late '80s, when co-founders Kelly Jefferson (a saxophonist) and Kelsley Grant (a trombonist) met while participating in the jazz studies program at McGill University. In 1995 Mitchell was chosen as part of the new group's sympathetic rhythm section, also including pianist Guy Dubuc and drummer Martin Auguste. Some of Mitchell's most inspired playing appears on a pair of discs created by the group, one entitled As One. The bassist's collaborations with Blackman include a title that provides a catch-all answer to any and all inquiries regarding release dates for recordings: Someday. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
