When this Willie Jones sang and recorded "Willie's Weary Blues" in the '20s, he may have been expressing fatigue about being confused with so many other musicians with this same name. Another song from the same session, "Blue Buddies Blues," may have had something to do with friends of Jones not being able to figure out which Jones is which, a subject that might give anyone the so-called "willies" after a while. Then again, fewer of these artists with the same name had shown up by the '20s, so perhaps this performer and his friends had other problems on their mind. A drummer and bandleader with the same moniker did indeed record for Gennett during the '20s, but the Willie Jones whose previously described vocalizations appear on several compilations of piano blues appears to be a different person altogether. This is also not the same Willie who recorded a John Lee Hooker-style number for Alan Lomax in the late '50s. "Willie's Weary Blues" and its companion song are on the second volume in a Document series of vintage tracks, Piano Blues, Vol. 2: 1927-1956 to be exact.
