I guess for me it depends on how the vocalist mixes with the music. You could have a really great vocalist but if the music doesn't suit the sound of his voice then it wouldn't really work. Imagine having Chris Cornell singing with the backing of the guys from Maroon 5 or the other way around.
Chris Cornell has really done a great job of sticking to bands where his voice is really appreciated.
