How the hell can you even put Punk and New Wave in the same genre?

    They're nothing alike!

Is there anyone else who's a bit baffled by this?

When I think of new wave I think of disposable '80s bands like Flock of Seagulls, Bow Wow Wow or Missing Persons.

Not to get too technical, but I'd consider Joy Division (and to a lesser extent, New Order) to be post-punk, not new wave.

The Velvet Underground practically revolutionized music... They created New Wave (technically), Punk, and the Alternative (The Beatles helped as well).

How the Beatles? I guess I could see with the new ideas & different influences... But I see them as more of an influence on pop music.

New wave did come out of the 70s punk scene. Bands like the Talking Heads and Blondie played in that old NY punk scene. It may not appear that way but if you look at old video footage of the scene from that era, then it will make more sense.
