Eh, who knows. Sex Pistols and PiL blow away the Dead Kennedy in my opinion.
Jello was, in my mind, mostly an Iggy Pop disciple. Borrowed 3/4 of his gimmicks to the Ig. Rotten did not. He was his own creation more than Jello (although he borrowed his ripped off clothes to Richard Hell). But both guys are great frontmen. I have a very vivid memory of Jello stage diving right on me during a gig in Antwerp, Belgium, in the early '80s... Great gig! What a pogo!
Stiv Bator (Dead Boys, Lords) was a great frontman too in the Iggy style!
I like 'em both a bunch, but I'm going to go with Jello, via a slight edge. Here's why:
- Johnny is always a sarcastic court jester who injected the first heavy dose of irony into rock and roll. Yes, he thumbs his nose at the money elites -- but he also treats everything as a joke. He's permanently 14 years old. He is a total jerk when you meet him.
- Jello is always sarcastic, but he uses it as a means to an end: to wake your mind up so that you are inspired to take action and fight. He treats everything with earnesty. He ran for Mayor of San Francisco. He puts his money where his mouth is, politically and financially. He is a total jerk when you meet him.
So Jello wins out for me. They are both old and fat now, but at least Jello is still an activist. To me, that is punk rock.
