Hector Lavoe was with Fania Records (known for artists like Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, and Willie Colon) and had huge hits like "El Cantante", "Mi Gente", "Che Che Cole", "Periodico de Ayer","El Dia de Suerte", "Tu Bien Lo Sabes" and "Bandolera" and was titled "El Cantante de los Cantante".
Frankie Ruiz got famous with Orquesta Solucion (led by Tommy Olivencia). Frankie had hits like "Mi Libertad", "La Cura", "Esta Corbadia", "Deseandote", "Bailando", "Mirandote", and "Desnudate Mujer" and was titled "El Papa de Salsa".
Both died almost the same way. They both used shared needles later in their career and died from AIDS.
Which one did you like better?
Although Lavoe was more successful than Ruiz (Lavoe had a longer career), I perfered Ruiz's voice more than Lavoe's.
