Huge Las Vegas music festival, set for Halloween weekend, nabs Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Widespread Panic, The Killers, The Mars Volta, Black Crowes, Fiona Apple, Raconteurs, and the Roots, among others.

If Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza haven't given you your fill of massive, outdoor music festivals this year, you'll have another chance over Halloween weekend in Las Vegas.

Vegoose 2006 Vegoose 2006

Vegas, baby.

The two-day Vegoose festival unveiled its initial lineup today, a 25-band list that is jam-band laden but every bit as diverse as last year's, with both Kool Keith as Dr. Octagon, Fiona Apple, and the Yonder Mountain String Band sharing the stage.

The biggest name on this year's lineup is Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, touring in support of Petty's Highway Companion album. The Killers will also perform just a few weeks after the release of their much-hyped sophomore album, Sam's Town.

The festival will also include performances from The Mars Volta, Black Crowes, Apple, Raconteurs, Damian "Jr Gong" Marley, the Roots, G Love & Special Sauce, Jurassic 5, Galactic, Praxis, Yonder Mountain String Band, Gomez, Built To Spill, Guster, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Dr. Octagon aka Kool Keith, Band of Horses, Jamie Lidell, and the Zutons.

On the jam-band front, multiinstrumentalist Keller Williams will be backed by noodlers the String Cheese Incident, and former Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman reform their 1970s-era percussion group Rhythm Devils, along with guitarist Steve Kimock and former Phish bassist Mike Gordon. Jazz-funk group Medeski Martin & Wood will perform with renowned saxophonist Maceo Parker.

As with last year, a host of shows dubbed Vegoose at Night will be held at Las Vegas venues before, during, and after the Sam Boyd event, with details to be announced.

The event will be held at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29. Tickets for two-day pass to the event will go on sale Saturday, August 19 at 10 a.m. on the festival's Web site. As in year's past, the event will feature several Halloween- and Vegas-themed attractions, such as an Impersonators Café, a Wedding Chapel, and a giant Great Evil Pumpkin.

The event, which is produced by Bonnaroo creators Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment, debuted in Vegas last year.

Fiona Apple Fiona Apple

Singer/songwriter Fiona Apple gained a recording contract in 1995 as one in a crop of mid-'90s female artists, but her confessional writing and throaty vocals made the teenager sound like much more than just the latest flavor. Born in 1977 in New York to singer Diana McAfee and actor Brandon Maggart, Apple began playing the piano at the age of...

Widespread Panic Widespread Panic

One of the many neo-hippie jam bands inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic established a devout grassroots following on the strength of constant touring and a loose, rootsy brand of Southern rock informed by jazz and blues textures. The group's origins dated to 1982, when vocalist John Bell and...

Keller Williams Keller Williams

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Keller Williams is literally a one-man jam band. His fascinating live shows feature him solo on-stage with a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, and he creates his backing loops in the moment, building and improvising as he goes on his custom-made ten-string guitar, and thanks to his equally as quirky,...

The Killers The Killers

Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), David Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass), and Ronnie Vannucci (drums) took the fashionista pop world by storm in summer 2004 with "Somebody Told Me." The perfectly stylish song pulls from the band's influences -- the Smiths, New Order, Oasis, and the Cure -- and it was just enough to get them on MTV. Part...

The Black Crowes The Black Crowes

At the time of their 1990 debut, the kind of rock & roll the Black Crowes specialize in was out of style. Only Guns N' Roses came close to approximating a vintage Stones-style raunch, but they were too angry and jagged to pull it off completely. The Black Crowes replicated that Stonesy swagger and Faces boogie perfectly. Vocalist Chris Robinson...

The Mars Volta The Mars Volta

Picking up the pieces from At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed the Mars Volta and wasted little time branching out into elements of hardcore, psychedelic rock, and free jazz that expanded on the boundaries of their previous work. Although their previous band's demise ultimately arrived before they were able to...

The Roots The Roots

Though popular success has largely eluded the Roots, the Philadelphia group showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic's "hip-hop band" philosophy of the mid-'80s by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio. Though their album works have been inconsistent affairs, more intent on building grooves than pushing...

The Raconteurs The Raconteurs

A self-described "new band made up of old friends," the Raconteurs feature the White Stripes' Jack White and power pop maestro Brendan Benson on vocals, keyboards, and guitars, and the Greenhornes' drummer Patrick Keeler and bassist Jack Lawrence as the group's rhythm section. The idea for the band began when Benson and White collaborated on the...

The String Cheese Incident The String Cheese Incident

The bluegrass-based jam band the String Cheese Incident is comprised of mandolinist/violinist Michael Kang, guitarist Bill Nershi, bassist Keith Moseley, pianist Kyle Hollingsworth, and percussionist Michael Travis. Formed in Boulder, CO, in 1993, the group's self-described "sacrilegious mix of bluegrass, calypso, salsa, Afro-pop, funk, rock,...

Damian \ Damian "Junior Gong" Marley

Damian Marley was only two when his father died, but the youngest of the Marley sons must have learned something. At the age of 13, he formed his first band, the Shepherds, which also included the son of Third World's Cat Coore and the daughter of Freddie McGregor; the group even opened up the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash festival. By 1994, Damian was...

The Raconteurs
It's hard to call the Raconteurs a genuine supergroup since there's only one true rock star in the quartet: the White Stripes' eccentric mastermind Jack White. Sometime between the recording of the Stripes' 2003 breakthrough Elephant and its willfully difficult 2005 follow-up, Get Behind Me Satan, White teamed up with fellow Detroit...
Fiona Apple "Extraordinary Machine"
Fiona Apple
Like Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot before it, Fiona Apple's third album, Extraordinary Machine, turned into an Internet legend as fans leaked the unreleased record as labels left it on the shelves. Since Wilco's album notoriously remained unreleased because their label deemed it uncommercial, Apple fans who were patiently waiting a long, long...
The Black Crowes "The Lost Crowes"
The Black Crowes
The Lost Crowes is right -- only hardcore fans will know of the music on this two-CD set, and even then, chances are they haven't heard it. And it's not like this is an odds-n-sods collection of outtakes and B-sides, either: The Lost Crowes contains two complete unreleased albums called Tall and Band, recorded in 1993 and 1997,...

Keller Williams
Keller is Keller Williams, the jam-band, progressive bluegrass musician known for his ten-string guitar (but here playing a small-size 12-string with four strings missing); the Keels are singer/guitarist Larry Keel and singer/bassist Jenny Keel. Together, they make up a string trio that finds both bluegrass and silliness in an unexpected set of...

Widespread Panic
One thing that can definitively be said about Widespread Panic is that they sound like no one else but themselves, whether they are playing covers live or performing original material. There are so many "the" bands -- the Strokes, the White Stripes, the Rapture, the Hives -- and so many garage rock/dance-rock tunes perfectly stylized and glamorous for the pop kids in the city and in the suburbs of new-millennium America. Tom Petty has always battled corporations and the music industry -- fighting for lower retail prices for Hard Promises, complaining about videos, and always fighting for old-school, artist-first '60s rock aesthetics.
