Band of Horses and Silversun Pickups lead the way with seven nominations each; Arctic Monkeys, Thom Yorke, The Knife, CSS, Hot Chip, Cat Power, Jenny Lewis, J Dilla also tapped.

The Plug Awards, which have become the de facto honor roll for independent music in recent years, unveiled the list of nominees today, with Seattle rockers Band of Horses and LA's Silversun Pickups leading the way with seven noms each.

The awards include traditional categories like artist, album, and song of the year, as well as a handful of genre-specific honors for hip-hop, metal, Americana, punk, and electronic/dance, among others. The awards also include honors for music videos, record stores, magazines, Web sites, and even album packaging.

A group of artists, journalists, label reps, and music industry insiders pick the nominees, but the winners are picked directly by fans, who can vote through the Plug Web site between now and January 26, 2007.

The awards will be doled out at a February 10 event at Irving Plaza in New York City, with several nominees set to perform. The nominees include some of the biggest names in indie music, including Beirut, Belle and Sebastian, Cat Power, Girl Talk, Grizzly Bear, J Dilla, Joanna Newsom, Neko Case, the Hold Steady, Radiohead front man Thom Yorke, and the Knife.

Plug is holding a series of events throughout the US to promote the awards. Check here for more info on upcoming Plug City Highlights Tour events set for Brooklyn, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Brooklyn, and Portland, Oregon.

Band of Horses Band of Horses

Seattle, WA's Band of Horses plays dense, aching mid-tempo indie rock reminiscent of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Formed in 2004 by multi-instrumentalists Ben Bridwell and Matthew Brooke out of the ashes of former incarnation Carissa's Wierd, the group caught the attention of Sub Pop during a show with friends and future lablemates Iron & Wine. The...

Silversun Pickups Silversun Pickups

Brian Aubert (guitar/vocals), Nikki Monninger (bass), Christopher Guanlao (drums), and Joe Lester (keyboards) comprise the swarthy indie rock stylings of Silversun Pickups. The quartet's textured melodies capture the hypnotic dream pop threads of My Bloody Valentine and pop bitter sweetness of Earlimart, and such a blend has wowed their native...

Arctic Monkeys Arctic Monkeys

Citing influences such as the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, Arctic Monkeys create a vibrant punk-inspired sound well suited for Britpop and alternative rock fans alike. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003. A year prior, Turner and...

The Knife The Knife

A brother and sister duo hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, the Knife takes inspiration from vintage synth pop and forward-thinking electronic music, crafting a sound that is equally unsettling, playful, and beautiful. CSS CSS

São Paulo, Brazil's provocative, freewheeling dance-rock sextet CSS takes its name from an abbreviation of "cansei de ser sexy," which is Portuguese for "tired of being sexy" (though, considering that the lead singer goes by the name Lovefoxxx, it's arguable how much that phrase actually applies to the band). CSS also includes bassist Iracema...

Hot Chip Hot Chip

Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was released by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution, Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats,...

Cat Power Cat Power

Cat Power was the alias of Chan Marshall, a Southern-bred singer/songwriter whose father, Charlie, was an itinerant pianist. After dropping out of high school, Marshall found herself in New York; performing under the name Cat Power, she was booked as the opening act for Liz Phair, where she met Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and Two Dollar...

Frequently and rightly placed in the same context as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Kanye West, Jay Dee built and sustained a high standing as a producer's producer while maintaining a low profile. The remoteness of the Knife (aka Olof and Karin Dreijer) and the chilliness of their music makes it easy to conjure up images of the duo working in a studio that resembles the Fortress of Solitude, playing instruments carved out of ice. You've gotta love the way Brazilian art rock/dance-pop act CSS kicks off their 2006 release Cansei de Ser Sexy -- which is Portuguese for "Tired of Being Sexy" -- with a rousing chant of "CSS sucks!"
