College network and hip-hop label pick South Carolina-based rapper-producer as first winner of monthly contest.

For at least the next month, Danny Swain can lay claim to being the big man on campus at the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Danny! Danny!

The aspiring rapper-producer has been chosen as the first winner of a monthly contest from mtvU, MTV's college network, and Definitive Jux Records, the acclaimed indie hip-hop label founded in 2000 by Company Flow front man and producer El-P.

Swain, whose artist name is Danny, will now hit the studio to record a digital EP for Def Jux and will collaborate with Def Jux rapper Mr. Lif on a single and video.

"Well, dang," Swain wrote in a blog entry on his MySpace page this week. "I don't think words can express how I'm feelin' right now. Happy? Grateful? Nah, those won't do. 'Borfnisserus' is the only one I could come up with, and that's not even a word. I think 'ecstatic' is close enough. When I got that phone call this morning from Mr. Lif himself, it took a lot for me to contain my excitement."

Danny! clearly has a sense of humor, as he cites "Copacabana" singer Barry Manilow among his influences. Check out Danny! here and at his MySpace page.

The Def Jux contest is one piece of mtvU's "Best Music on Campus" contest, which seeks to highlight up-and-coming artists from colleges across the country.

Danny! Danny!

While South Carolina producer/MC Danny! declares himself "A Tribe Called Quest on acid, or EPMD on LSD," he's much more complex than that. Born to military parents in the summer of 1983, Danny Swain never had enough time to grow roots in any particular area. With his family crisscrossing the country, the scenery was always changing and so were...

Mr. Lif Mr. Lif

When he began releasing singles in the late '90s, party rap was the dominant style most MCs favored, but Mr. Lif's lyrical agenda was a political and socially conscious one that recalled the rap stars of the previous decade -- Public Enemy, Gang Starr, and Boogie Down Productions. Born Jeffrey Haynes, Mr. Lif grew up in the Boston, MA, suburb of...

Danny!
The third, and allegedly final, record in the young MC's career, Charm finds Danny! at his most adventurous, and probably at his most mature. It's hailed as a concept album that traces the rise and (probable) fall of an artist who found overnight success, and though this isn't incorrect, Charm's really more of a frame story, a dream bookended by...
