Hank Jr., Skynyrd to get Rowdy on tour

February 1, 2007 at 11:31:00 AM

Country legend and Southern rock relics to team up for string of weekend shows; 38 Special to open select dates.

Hank Williams Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd will co-headline the Rowdy Frynds arena tour, Billboard.com has learned.

The initial run of shows includes 20 dates, beginning April 11 at the VBCC Arena in Huntsville, Alabama. Other markets include Tampa, Florida; Indianapolis, Baltimore, Nashville, Detroit, Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Atlanta.

Tickets go on sale February 10. 38 Special will open the first 10 shows, and Chris Janson will open the second 10. Williams and Skynyrd will inaugurate their paring via performances on CBS' The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson Sunday and Monday nights.

The two artists teamed up for a brief but successful run several years ago, and Williams' appearance on the VH1 Classics show with Skynyrd last summer revived their synergy.

"When Hank and Skynyrd got back together again, everyone went, 'We need to go out and tour together again and have a good time,"' says Ross Schilling, who manages both acts for Vector Management.

Skynyrd is a notorious road warrior, but Williams' modus operandi the past decade has been to work only 20-25 nights a year in choice markets for top dollar. Williams generally plays only weekends, and on the Frynds tour, all dates are on Friday or Saturday night, save the Wednesday opener in Huntsville.

"We want to maximize fan base so people can come out, have a good time, and not worry about going to work the next morning," says Schilling. Indeed, both Skynyrd and Williams are known for ringing up huge alcohol and beer sales at their shows, holding records in several venues.

The offspring of famous musicians often have a hard time creating a career for themselves, yet Hank Williams, Jr. is one of the few to develop a career that is not only successful, but markedly different from his legendary father. Originally, Hank Jr. simply copied and played his father's music, but as he grew older, he began to carve out his...

Lynyrd Skynyrd Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band -- they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their...

Hank Williams, Jr. delivered one of his finest albums in 2002 with the loose-limbed, vigorous The Almeria Club Recordings, a record that found the veteran outlaw sounding more muscular than he had in years. A year later, he followed it with I'm One of You, a more conventional latter-day Hank Jr. record, one that was a little slicker, brighter,...

Having endured the loss of yet another bandmember with the passing of original bassist Leon Wilkeson, Skynyrd picks up the pieces yet again and delivers the goods the way only it can. Lyrically, the band hasn't stretched out its list of topics in any new directions, but quite honestly, who cares? This is Skynyrd. This isn't music to study to or...
