We Begin with the Airing of Grievances: 2009 Edition

Happy hollidays to everyone. The rush around here was so intense that I haven't had time for anything other than work and doing various Christmas related tasks. I hope everyone's version of the winter festival went well and that you got all that your grubby little gamer hearts desired.

Now, it wouldn't be a Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanza/Festivus related blog if I didn't go into an inordinate amount of detail as it pertains to all that we got here at the laughlyn12 house. Needless to say the backlog for 2010 has already begun to stack up.

Our big ticket gaming purchase this year was the ubiquitous Nintendo Wii. At least three other houses in our neighborhood got one as I noticed the Wii boxes out in the trash today.

This has been my first real in-depth Wii experiences as my previous ones all came in a more casual setting at my cousin's house.

I'm going to be honest about the Wii. While its great and its fun let's be honest. It's limited... at least to me. I will not play games just to be able to "waggle" two controllers around in some twisted person's idea of "intuitive control". There are very few actions that I can see myself translating to shaking my fist's like Michael J Fox when he's trying to sign his name. (Too soon?)

Wii Sports is great even though golf is a horrible analog for a real golf swing and while I know Tiger Woods PGA 10 for the Wii with the Wii Motion Plus is supposed to be about as close a real golf swing as possible I'm not sure that I'm comfortable shelling out my money to his brand at this point in time.

We also got Wii Play if for no other reason than the second Wiimote. The game is crap with the exception of the cow racing... for some reason the gf and I love that game.

Mario Galaxy was the next Wii game that we got and its honestly about as good as platformers get. I haven't played a Mario game since the Nintendo 64 and despite all the years that have passed I don't feel like I've been left behind. The controls make sense and I don't feel like I'm just flailing my arms about because I'm supposed to. Outstanding level design... probably some of the best I've ever seen.

Lastly, I picked up Zelda: Twilight Princess last night and so far so good. It seems just like OoT and as far as I'm concerned that's just great by me.

The one thing that I did notice while playing these two games yesterday is how "japanese" they really feel. The fantastic world and characters are obviously not something constructed here in the states for better or worse.

And while all these in and of themselves wouldn't necessarily create a backlog our other new game most definitely will. The girlfriend really wanted Dragon Age: Origin so we picked that up on sale the day after Christmas and despite its obvious technical flaws (choppy frame rate, texture pop ins, etc) it really is an amazing game. 50 hours just for a single play through? That's what I keep hearing. You know a game is good when the first time you play it you get several IM's on XBL from people telling you how great the game is.

I guess that's it considering I doubt you give a damn about our new curtains and rugs which were also Christmas gifts.

Hope everyone had a great holliday and got everything they wanted.

Take care and happy gaming.

Laughlyn

Another year, another decade. I'm getting old.

I have just discovered the magical beauty of the band The Doors. I know, I'm only 40 years late but I tell you what 60's music is really starting to grow on me and I'm starting to feel old and I'm only 21 going on 22 in March. I am really starting to appreciate classical music and I've even started getting into the Beatles white album and Abbey Road even Sgt. Peppers. Oh boy I think things are only going to go downhill from here. So much for me being a Generation X. I might have to say goodbye to my 90's music collection and make way for more Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, but I will never say Goodbye to My Bloody Valentine or my Stone roses but my Smashing Pumpkins listening days are slowly coming to an end even though I am too afraid to say Goodbye to Siamese Dream.

Have a wonderful festive season everyone and I hope all your new years dreams come true. Goodbye to another decade.

Man, oh man.

Interesting past couple of weeks for myself. I don't even know what to think about some of it.

Hurting people's feelings, myself having euphoric feelings, near adultery, just some stuff I never saw happening but it's pretty complicated.

Just wanted to update you guys on some things. I've been playing a lot of God of War Collection. I finished it two nights ago, actually. Since I completed that I've purchased Resident Evil 2 off PSN for $5.99. I still love that game so much.

I haven't been playing many games recently. I've been watching movies mostly. I signed up for Netflix for me and one of my roommates. I've used it with Mom so much I really enjoy the system.

I'm still working at The Home Depot. Things are going great there. I'm really happy I got a job there. I'm so glad it is my first job as well. I've met so many great people since starting there and I feel that I've learnt so much from working there. I actually get a raise pretty soon.

Not really much to tell. Or I don't want to tell. I wish all the best for you guys. Also I'm really sorry to the one I hurt. Really sorry.

Peace.

Alienware M17

I eagerly awaited the FedEx man today anticipating the arrival of my new Alienware M17 "desktop replacement" laptop. It finally came in and I was so excited! I could hardly sign for it. I carefully opened it and removed and inspected everything. Its a pretty nice looking laptop and the 17" screen is very luxurious. Speedwise its very fast in terms of running Windows Vista 32bit and doing the general computing that I'm doing on it right now. I started playing with some of the features like using Alienwares Facial Recognition software and the built in web cam to log into windows and using the finger print reader to not only log into windows but also log into websites like gamespot, dslreports, yahoo!, and even my college! How cool is that!? The illuminated keyboard is very nice and I can switch the color from blue, red, green, or off. I haven't played any games on it yet but I'm downloading everything in my Steam account right now! I'll get more in depth with it later and post a proper review by Sunday.

The specs for this beast are as follows...

Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4Ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory (yes DDR3 not 2 )
Crossfire Enabled ATi HD 3870's (yes 2 of them!)
250GB SATA 7200RPM HDD
17" screen (1440x900)
illuminated keyboard
2.0 Megapixel webcam
Fingerprint reader
Memory card reader
HDMI port
Windows Vista 32bit SP1
and a few other goodies

Evil Roomates
Momma always said"be careful who you make friends with." Well I've done it this time, some fine mess I have gotten myself into. She has even gone so for as to have someone threaten myself and my husband. Can you believe it? Probably not. The reality is none of you will never even begin to live with someone as lying, caniving, and as crazy as her behind is. I have never met someone with such a lack of common sense, and to make it worse she does nothing but make idle threats. I want to choke slam her, but that isn't the christian way. But praying for her is doing nothing, and being nothing sure as hell aint working either. She is supposed to be kicked out by January but that looking grimmer and grimmer. Something has to be done, cause I wont stand by while someone threatens my life. I have had enough. Think this is exciting, this is only my crazy roomate, just wait til I tell you about the rest of "a zoo" my life is.

My 4th Favorite Game Of All Time

Half-Life 2 (PC, 2004)

This scene didn't actually appear in the final game, but the rest of Half-Life 2 certainly lived up to the hype.

Despite arriving well past its initial 2003 release date, Half-Life 2 made an earth-shattering impression. It saw the return of the silent, crowbar wielding figurehead of the resistance movement, an unwitting spearhead behind the people's liberation against Dr Breen's oppressive regime: Gordon Freeman.

Much had changed since Gordon's 1998 outing - the game sported a complete visual overhaul (not surprising, considering the six year gap) and with a revolutionary physics system, unforgettable water effects and a gravity defying "gravity" gun, Half-Life 2's new campaign was as timeless as ever.

The seamless blend of chapters helped push home the sentiment of a continuous, freewheeling story taking place over a dozen or so hours, while boat rides and flimsy buggies transported Gordon to his next port of call. Revamped enemy AI helped keep the gunfights as challenging as the original.

Half-Life 2 is still as impressive as it was four years ago. It's the definitive shooting experience with impeccable pacing. While the Steam authentication system is a mild blemish, Half-Life 2 still warrants fourth place.

well... maybe i'll stay then... with some pretty cool news too!

i'll just switch between the two profiles

anyways, you guys know about the music videos i make. those 24, Kiefer and MGS ones. well i got this message from someone on youtube today;

Hi, Mel ~

I'm Jennifer, the web designer and webmistress at Corey Feldman's official NEW website, http://www.coreyfeldman.net./ The old coreyfeldman.COM is no longer his official site; it was snagged by a cybersquatter when the domain name lapsed by accident.

We saw your video on YouTube and really liked it! Your creativity in editing video and music together is original and inventive. We'd like to present it on Corey's website, with appropriate credit to you (either your real name or screen name).

As you may have heard, YouTube and other video sites are assailed on all sides with those who would like someone to pay for uploading videos. We all know where this is heading. So we want to make sure your video doesn't disappear into thin air if YouTube is forced to take down a lot of content.

If you're willing, we'd like you to mail (or email) us a DVD of your LOST BOYS tribute video at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK76Iv_4a4I

We have some YouTube videos presented on our site, such as trailers for Corey's movies, but some are fuzzy. If you have a good, clean version of one of Corey's trailers, we'd sure like to get better copies of those. Also, if you have any videos of Corey in concert, interview or appearance clips, McDonald's commercial and anything else you'd like to
share, we'd like to post them on the website.

Please e-mail me back with your okay, and I'll send you our mailing address.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lac Kamp
Web Producer
jennifer@coreyfeldman.net

the videos been uploaded and sent to her of course

Halo Wars!

First off, I know I haven't posted in my journal lately. Busy as always, what else is new? I'm still around and checkin stuff regularly, I just haven't gotten around to posting in my journal.

Now to that important news. HALO WARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not gonna lie, I about pee'd my pants after watching the trailer for this 360 exclusive. How did all this happen?

Well, wednesday's are my busiest days in college, so I finally got back to my dorm room a little after 4:00 pm. I turned on my laptop, turned on CNN to watch the stuff about the hostage situation at a high school in Bailey, Colorado (very tragic story, my prayers go out to the girl who was critically injured), and put on some tunes. I went through my usual routine of checkin my email, myspace, cnn, etc. When i got down to Bungie.net on my favorites list, I clicked it just to see if there were any updates. To my surprise, there was a large article on the main page that led me to finding out about the new RTS game called Halo Wars. I was sceptical at first, not quite sure Halo would work as an RTS. However, I'm completly flipped after watching the trailer. Graphics were tremendous, trailer was intense and intriguing, and it just really got my halo blood pumping. I'm not gonna go into all the details about Halo Wars, just type it into the search box at the top of the page to get the scoop on it. I highly recommend anyone who's into RTS games and/or Halo to check it out. Make sure you watch the trailer. You can bet on me reserving this game ASAP.

Finally getting an xbox360!
In about 4 weeks I get my xbox360. I can't wait, I want to have it for a very long time. But I'm not sure which games I'm going to buy. So if anyone wants to recommend a game to me, just post a message . One game that's for sure is Saints Row, since I want to buy the Saints Row packet. A friend of my has an xbox360 and I liked Rockstar's Table Tennis very much so maybe I'm going to buy that game too. And I also have an xbox, so I can play my xbox games on the 360.
