Thriller 25th Anniversary
""
25 years ago, Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones teamed up for another album. Originally called "Starlight Love" (or at least, the title track was called that), this album rocketed Jackson's career into superstardom. The former child star had created one of the most influencial albums: Thriller. Released on November 30th, 1982, this album featured hit singles such as "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Thriller". Also, Jackson performed Billie Jean on "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" and it ended up being one of the best moments in music history. To this day, it has sold around 104 million copies worldwide, making it the world's best selling album. And now, the 49 year old is making a 25th Anniversary Edition to make a comeback into the music industry. But does it still thrill after 25 years of awesomeness? The album is released with two covers. The standard one has Michael Jackson surrounded by a group of zombies, like the classic "Thriller" music video. The other one, is basically the same as the original Thriller's cover, except it says "Thriller 25" (obviously). The inside has Michael Jackson with those yellow eyes from the Thriller music video and it has 2 discs: The main CD and the DVD: The Short Films. The CD features 16 tracks and the "Short Films" has 4 films: "Thriller", "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and the legendary performance of Billie Jean on "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today Forever...". The films are still amazing, and the Thriller music video is still awesome (it's not as scary as it was when we were little but man, it's great). "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" are still great. And the Motown 25 performance of Billie Jean is still one of greatest things to ever be on TV. The films are great but it would be nice if they had more. It would be cool to have the "Making of Thriller" (music video) thing and some interviews with Michael Jackson. We should also get the EPK thing (it's on youtube, if you don't know) and the making of Thriller 25. Also, it would be nice to get some advertisements for some things. But, it's still good. The CD is the main part of this record. The original tracks are as good as before. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" still grows on you with MJ's singing, beat, music, and the classic African Chanting ("Mama se Mama sa Mama coo sa"). "Baby Be Mine" is an underrated track, and I don't see why no one seems to talk about it. It's a great track and, even though it may have been a filler for the original album, this is amazing. It's kind of like the old Sonic Game's music. "The Girl Is Mine" is really good and it would be nice to see MJ and Paul McCartney make a duet again. Too bad, that'll probably never happen again... While the first three tracks were great, "Baby Be Mine" and "The Girl Is Mine" did not exactly live up to the greatness of "Wanna Be Startin Somethin'". The next track is really where things started to get interesting. Yup, that's right. "Thriller" is the 4th track on this! It's definitely one of Michael Jackson's best songs and is my personal favorite from the album. The title track still thrills and the lyrics, vocals, music, beat, Vincent Price's distinctive "rap", and pretty much everything is PERFECT. Following that, "Beat It" comes up and it's still really good. Its concept is nice and the guitar solo is great. Pretty much everything from that track is perfect as well. The 6th track, pretty much Jackson's most popular song of all time, is "Billie Jean". It's easy to see why people like it and how it was so thrilling 25 years ago. The beat, music, and vocals is just perfect. It made Jackson a superstar and is still one of the best. Yeah, the 4th, 5th, and 6th track are perfect. "Human Nature" is also pretty good, too. Another of my favorites is "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)". I really liked this song and it's seriously underrated. I don't see why people just see as a "weak filler" when it's an amazing song. I really liked the techno beat. In my opinion, it's also a perfect song. Even though the album is probably MJ's best, it is pretty disappointing to see that there was only one track left on the album now that I've explained the other ones. "The Lady In My Life" is also underrated and it's good. But it makes people want to come back for more. That's it? That's all of the Thriller? This needs more tracks, I think. OK, you also get an entertaining Voice-Over Session by Vincent Price. R.I.P. Vincent, you always had a great sense of humour. The 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th track are album's best. That's why I loved the original so much. Now, it may seem that it was a good idea for MJ to collaborate with modern artists like Akon and will.i.am. but are all of these team-ups really good? As you can tell from my tone... NO. Like the original album, the first of the collaborations (like the first of the tracks of the original album) is great and some stuff after that doesn't live up to it. However, in the original album, the tracks would start to get even better than the opening track. The collaborations, on the other hand, never had gotten better than the opening track. Huh? Oh, wait, the first of the collaborations is "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) 2008". Looks like I was thinking about the track after that... but the new version of P.Y.T. almost butchers the original song. Get out of here, will.i.am. You're doing this song no favors and I hated how the original song was so underrated; now you're just making people hate it. Yup, I'm talking about "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" featuring Akon. And it's actually great. Akon imitates Michael Jackson's great voice and offers a great cover. "Beat It 2008" is... well, I like the new beat and music. MJ sounds good with it... but Fergie? No, no, just no. Fergie makes it sound like one of the crappy modern hard rock songs. I guess it's all right... but it's pretty mediocre at the same time. "Billie Jean 2008" is good... but it seems kind of pointless to have Kanye West when he really isn't doing anything. But, this version is inferior to the original track and it's pretty much has no point since Kanye just says stuff like "Uh", "Yeah", and some other "gangsta" stuff. Sorry, but "Uh"s and "Yeah"s don't make a song special. So, we get a new track for this album: "For All Time". It was previously unreleased from the original Thriller sessions. It was brought back in Dangerous... but didn't seem to make the final cut. So, it is pretty good but I criticize for sounding too similar to Human Nature. It's basically kind of like the same thing... except it's a love song, I guess. It's good, but really, it's nothing special. Now, you know what really gets me mad? You see, there's another track called "Got the Hots" (sounds like it was released during the Thriller era) in the album... well, only in the Japanese version. THAT'S what gets me mad. I've heard that song, and it's incredible. Why would MJ remove it from all of the other versions? Really, most of the new collaborations aren't really all that good and For All Time is nothing special. If we just had THIS song, I would've given this a 4.5. But since we don't have it... 4 stars! And if we weren't including the original versions... I would've given this something lower than that. I would give this 3.5, 2.5, or 2 stars. Also, why couldn't we get everything from the "Thriller: Special Edition"? Abd it would have been nice to hear the original "Starlight Love" demo. I honestly feel as if this album is incomplete but since I'm so nice, I'll give this 4 stars. Overall, this is kind of disappointing. However, this is a great way to start for Michael Jackson's album. I can't wait for his next Studio Album! It better not suck, though. "Invincible" wasn't all that good...
