End of Time

The end of David Tennant's run on Doctor Who certainly was pretty excellent, though perhaps much of the story made little sense (like many season finales for the show, if you think about them too much) or wasn't explained adequately (like why exactly the gaggle of women thought resurrecting Harold Saxon to begin with was something they should and/or wanted to do). The end was very touching, and it was nice to see his 'selfish benevolence', being able to say goodbye and do some good at the same time. I'm still very unsure about Matt Smith; there's something very odd about his appearance/features that I'm finding a tad off-putting. But if the writing is there, I'm sure the show will do just fine. What I'd really love is for The Doctor and whatever companion he latches onto to actually stick together for more than just one season. After all this upheaval lately, a little bit of continuity and cohesiveness would be nice.

I completed the single-player campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Hardened mode. I may try a few levels on Veteran to see if I can swing them, but I'm not anticipating a full run-through. There were some nice twists and turns to the story, and the action never, ever lets up; you can't ever feel really safe. In multiplayer, my accuracy is nearing 32%, almost a full eight percentage points above my closest friend. It just keeps inching upwards tad by tad, though I'm sure it will level off at some point. Sometimes I wonder if I 'sprayed and prayed' a bit more if I might do better kill-wise. It's a tough choice, as if I'm behind/chasing someone and wait to line up a decent shot they might suddenly turn around and surprise me, but if I shoot from the hip and/or too quickly and miss, they'll definitely turn around to engage me.

What was very fun was linking up with danbambridge (dakstra) for some team deathmatches yesterday afternoon, and we both played a bit more than we'd planned. It gets so frustrating seeing the banner at the bottom of the lobby screen listing XBox friends playing the game, but never being actually with them, so I suggested an invite. In most team modes' lobbies, if two people join up and enter they're always on the same team, so on the plus side we could look out for each other a little bit, but on the minus we never got to square off against one another. We really didn't get to chat too much between all the noise, just trying to stay alive, and this little kid who kept screaming, "I pwned you so many times," at people between matches. I also got to see some really great teamwork, though sadly from the other team who smartly all took their lead and retreated into a building and set up auto turrets outside the entrances as time was expiring; it was impressive and agitating all at the same time.

That's all for today. Thanks for reading, everybody!

"A Plague on Humanity"
I haven't blogged since the big blog problem we had a while back. it seems that everything is all sorted out now, so I thought I'd just pop in with a quick quote from a book that I'm currently reading and enjoying-- Cat in a Topaz Tango: A Midnight Louie Mystery, by Carole Nelson Douglas and Midnight Louie. The quote is from Midnight Louie, who is a feline P.I. who "writes" part of the story--

"I cannot tell you how sick, ticked, and piqued I am about cell phones. These miserable little devices are like a medieval infestation of rats. They breed everywhere. People are entirely at their beck and call, and run shrieking to cuddle them every time they squeal. And they have a thousand annoying voices, some famous. This fad to have unique 'ring tones' is a plague on humanity. Anyone with sensitive hearing is assaulted daily, and also left out of the loop watching folks speak loudly as they wander down the street. Time was, people behaved that way, they were put in custody 'for observation.'"

That is all for now. More detailed blog entry coming soon.

Submission Guidelines - Just a Repost
Nothing too thrilling here. Just thought I'd repost the submission guidelines I use. They appear on the forums of all currently-airing shows I edit, but better to have them here then in the forum of every show I edit.

-----

1 ) Look at what's already on the page. If there's nothing there yet, look at another episode page. If you want to know what name to use for a regular character (Dick vs. Captain Richard), or if a name should be bolded, or whether there should be double-spacing between quote lines, or whether quotation marks should be used, or where to use italics, do what's already been done. If you're not sure how to do the XHTML, click on Edit for an existing entry and see how it's done.

2 ) Don't steal from another site. Except for Quotes, everything should be in your own words (and that includes quote contextual material). Even summaries based on press releases should be rewritten as "your content." It's a TV.com requirement, it's copyright, and it's common courtesy.

3 ) Be accurate and provide a source. Unless you're an incredibly fast typist/writer and have an incredible ear for dialogue, pause the recording. Rewind. Transcribe the dialogue, rewind again, double-check. For episodes that haven't aired yet, always provide an original verifiable source in Comments. Provide as complete a URL as possible: if I can't find it, I can't accept it.

4 ) If you edit, use Comments to tell me what you're editing and why. Be specific. "Fixing 2 typos." doesn't help. "Changed "his" to "her" in third paragraph, changed "their" to "they're" in second paragraph" does. If something should be deleted, mark it for deletion and put the explanation in Comment, don't "argue" or give a "response."

5 ) Know basic grammar and punctuation. "I" is capitalized. Names are capitalized. Sentences get periods at the end (or question marks or exclamation marks). A single space goes after most punctuation except at the end of a sentence. Know the difference between "its" and "it's." ("It's" = "It is"). When speaking to someone and using their name, a comma goes before and after their name. "It's true that I love you, Fred, but I love you too, George." is correct. "Its true that i love you fred but I love you too,George" is not.

6 ) Don't duplicate. Particularly for major plot points, if the info is in the Recap, it doesn't need to be in Notes or Trivia. If a quote appears entirely in Allusions, it doesn't need to be in Quotes as well. Click on More Quotes/Trivia/Notes. You typically don't see everything on the episode's main page.

7 ) Don't anticipate. That's part of being accurate. Don't go by previews--sometimes scenes get cut or another version used when the episode goes to air. Don't assume an Allusion will be an allusion until you see the episode.

8 ) It's not personal. Don't insert stuff like "I" or "Don't you think" or "We all know..." Stick to the factual and put opinions, analysis, and speculation into your review.

9 ) Quotes. Quotes should be memorable, significant, and/or humorous. They should stand on their own and make sense to someone who hasn't seen the show, and represent quality writing. Don't use quotes just to "prove" something or indicate a key moment if the words aren't otherwise memorable, significant, or humorous. Try to focus on the key line or lines and avoid three paragraphs of "set up" quotes. Bold the speaker name, then put in an unbolded colon, then a space, then the line quote. Don't put quotation marks around each line. Hit a single Return/Enter for the next speaker's line. Contextual explanations should be used as little as possible, be as short as possible, put in parentheses, and italicized. For episodes that aren't currently premiering, a time code in the Comment section is preferred.

10 ) Notes. As per TV.com standards, Notes is for off-screen production-related stuff. Stuff the characters wouldn't know. Background music, special credit info, relevant background on the actors, in-jokes, etc. "What else they've been in" and "They're best known for" and "They've worked together before" is covered by the cast list section and its links, unless there's some kind of in-joke involved.

11 ) Trivia. As per TV.com standards, Trivia is for obscure yet on-screen stuff the viewer might not notice. This includes goofs. Plot points and other obvious stuff are often spoilers and are not Trivia--they should go in the Recap. According to TV.com guidelines, Trivia is not merely a catchall for anything that doesn't fit in the other categories. Nor is it the place for fan theories or speculation, or goofs based on same.

12 ) Allusions. As per TV.com standards, Allusions are for cultural references--other TV shows, movie, films, books. Always provide the single line of the quotation first that contains the Allusion (formatted as #9 above), then a single return, then the explanation. Internal continuity is pretty common in TV shows so unless it's obscure (Trivia), it's not an Allusion. The explanation (not cut-n-pasted) should be detailed enough that someone unfamiliar with the allusion can understand: roughly 20-50 words, one paragraph. Word definitions and translations are not Allusions (or Trivia or Notes, either). Allusions are deliberate and typically something the writers have the characters say. Allusions should be unique and reference the original source whenever possible, rather then another show that references the original source.

13 ) Summaries and Recaps. Summaries should be short and not give away any spoilers. Recaps should be a complete scene-by-scene account of the episode, without stage directions or meta-references like "In this scene...". Actor names don't go in summaries or recaps. Write it like you'd write a reference book entry. Don't include real-life info ("This season," actor listings, etc.). Save quotes for the Quote section (see #9 above).

-----

One last thing. If you submit something and it's rejected, remember: it's nothing personal. These standards are in place to promote accuracy, readability, and keep the episode pages from being too "cluttered" with extraneous info. If you get a rejection, read the Comments I provide, come here and look at these guidelines, and PM me if you have any questions. Some folks I had to reject the first time are now my most prolific contributors.

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

My birthday is tomorrow!!!

I prolly won't be on tomorrow, although you never know.

A friend is taking me to Atlantic City, can't wait to hit those nickle slots

Sorry if I haven't talked to you lately, since this new site layout popped up I've spent a record-low amount of time. My queue is packed and the only activity I've done is make sure it doesn't spill over past seven days and try to keep my currently-airing shows somewhat up-to-date, although some have fallen to the wayside.

I wrote a blog about what I thought about the new tv.com, but it got lost in the update. In short, I don't like this site at all. I don't have to decide to leave or not, I practiclly already have.

Tomorrow I will be a Cylon no more...

I'm at Level 37 (99.11%) so I pretty sure that just by posting this blog I will be at Level 38 tomorrow. Farewell, Cylon level. And while I'm here - "Frak!"

By the way, I'd like to mention to people who contribute to my guides that scripts downloaded off the net often have loads of errors in them like mispelled names and misquoted text/script lines. I would recommend turning on your closed captioning while watching an episode not copying-and-pasting from some random-person-transcribed script you found on the net for free.

Do most people get both The CW and My Network TV without a cable box? People keep coming down on their ratings but it has been my experience that most people get only one of these stations in their area. I also noticed that during the UPN/WB consolidation the CW picked mostly former WB stations but didn't pay attention to whether the stations could be received without a cable box. In my area you couldn't get The WB without a cable box and you couldn't get UPN with one (you had to unplug to box to watch something on UPN). I'm just thinking that The CW and My Network TV should be labeled cable stations since it seems that most people only have access to both with a cable box. If they viewed them that way then the ratings would be high/average for a cable station not constantly last place among basic networks.

Oceans 13

Went to see Oceans 13 the other day. Not my choice just to keep the peace. I saw Oceans 11 and thought it was average, didn't bother with 12.

13 was ok if you don't mind a bunch of A-listers looking smug and patting themselves on the back while being tiringly self referential.

"settle down, have a couple of kids"

Looking for Beta Users!

Hey guys,

Just launched a small site on the side with a small team and we're looking for a group of beta users to play around with the site and give feedback.

The Site:

http://www.thinkingsmartr.com

The Lowdown:

Thinkingsmartr is (hoping to become) the world's largest, collaborative suggestion box. The site allows you to create any topic you want (by default, you become the editor of each topic you create) and encourages you and others to collectively make suggestions that would improve the topic.

Each suggestion is voted on by the community and the best suggestions float naturally to the top while the least important suggestions fall to the bottom. The hope is that with enough passionatte users discussing their ideas to better a topic --- people will take note and the best suggestions will actually take foot.

For instance, say you have a bunch of ideas to make TV.com better. Go ahead and start the TV.com topic and post some suggestions to help make TV.com a better place. Others can then come in and vote on your suggestions (as well as make suggestions of their own) and with any luck your suggestions will actually be implemented on the site (please note -- this is not a garauntee that all or any suggestions will be fulfilled -- but I will personally be keeping an eye on that particular topic ).

What we need:

A passionate group of users to play with the site and give us feedback on features you would like to see as well as bugs you come across as you use it. We also encourage you to spread the word --- as more get people involved, the more interesting and fun the site will be.

Thanks guys

They used to dress up with animal skins and skulls and light a bonfire to commenarate this event.

Evanescence tribute

                                The Open Door

They rose to fame with their monster debut "Fallen" which has went on to sell over 15 million copies worldwide. After the departure of Ben Moody, many thought that lead singer Amy Lee was just a pretty face and his shadow. After more than 3 year since Fallen's release the band are back, minis Moody and this time better than ever!

 The Open Door

After buying the album last week i was so excited at to what they have to offer us. Amy Lee has giving us an amazing stepup and such an amazing followup to Fallen. The stunning guitar work and the operatic metal makes the album all the more flawless. The style in music is much more vibrant and darker, unlike Fallen which screams suicide and depression, The Open door is more about not being afraid anymore and taking control. Amy did state in interviews that she now free to do what she wants without Ben controling her but thats not my place to speak about. I must say, Ben Moody leaving the band is the best thing that could have happened to them.

All in all i give the album a 10/10. Perfect!

My favourite songs so far are:

Lacrymosa : A wonderfull cover of mozartz Lacrimosa! Stunning from start to finish.

Like You

Lithium

Snow White Queen

Sweet Sacrifice

Cloud Nine

All the songs are amazing but i must say the lyrics and songs are a lot more disturbing than Fallens. "Snow White Queen" gives you the feeling that she is being raped but she is actualy being stalked and expressing her fears and the dark and haunting "Like You" is realy distrubing. The line "I long to be like you, sis. Lie cold in the ground like you, Death. Theres room inside for two." gave me chills.

Anyway i will give a complete reveiw of the Album, track by track!!! Signing off,,, Robster

Open Season
Looks like I am being forced to retire from my guides.

The reason for this is that I have not been on working on my queue due to (1) being on vacation for the summer and (2) not being able to get my queue to load in a quick manner (changes to the site have really caused it to work incredibly slowly on my computer. This has been going on for several month. It is so slow that actually clearing submissions is simply too tedious for me... I don't like having to wait 10 minutes to clear 20 submissions. I really wish trusted users could also clear submissions. I preferred the co-editor systemn of TVTome for that reason. I could go on break without having to worry about such things. I don't know why such a system was never implemented here).

In any case... I suppose that now it is "open season" on several highly desirable guides. I hope who ever gets them does a good job with them. In all honesty, I never really wanted to maintain this many guides. I just liked submitting/correcting things. Unfortunately, however, submissions are the selection criteria for editorship. And I ended up with a bunch. Some of which I have not maintained at all due to a serious lack of interest. Hope they go to the more interested (or even slightly interested).

I shall be retiring from most of my guides. I will make as many people trusted users as possible as I retire. Hopefully you can maintain that status as the change happens (though I am skeptical of this occurring).

I will be retiring from all but the Alfred Hitchcock guides, the Millennium Guide, and the Outer Limits (original series). All of that content was created by me at TVTome (when I was under the impression that I held copyright over the material). I feel that I am perfectly in my rights to maintain them even now.

Reporting MIA Editors
MIA EDITORS

An editor is considered MIA if they have not been active on the site for over 30 days and/or submissions in their editor's queue have been pending for more than 3 days (for a show on our Top 20 List,) or more than 7 days (for a show NOT on the Top 20 List.) Any submissions left unmoderated longer than the deadline may be moderated by TV.com staff. Inactive editors who have not logged into the site for 30 days or longer may be force-retired from their guide(s), regardless of whether or not there are new subs in their queues. This is to ensure that editors are active and ready to moderate submissions whenever they come in.

If you need to report an editor as MIA, send a PM to this profile. You must include the following information:

• username in the Subject Line
• ID of the guide(s)
• specific reason(s) for why you are reporting them as MIA.

The ReportMIAEditor inbox will be checked every Wed. and Friday. We will not issue responses from ReportMIA but you will recieve a PM from staff letting you know the outcome of the investigation. Staff will NOT discuss the details of the investigation.

Each MIA case will be considered unique, and staff may use some discretion in regards to the amount of submissions pending in the editor's queue, how popular the guide is, the editor's history with the guide, etc.

Any editor receiving a warning MUST respond to the warning PM as soon as possible with an explanation. Failure to respond within 7 days to any MIA warning will result in automatic retirement from the guide in question. The ReportMIAEditor inbox is checked daily. We will not issue responses from the ReportMIAEditor account but if necessary, you will receive a PM from staff letting you know the outcome of the investigation. Staff will NOT discuss the details of the investigation. As editors are given time to reply to the warning, it is not necessary to spam the ReportMIAEditor account with multiple PMs regarding the same editor. Doing so is counterproductive and may weaken your complaint.

Special Circumstances

If you are an editor and you know that you will be unavailable to edit your guide(s) for a set period of time, you can PM staff member nilla_chelle01 or post the details regarding your absence from TV.com in the pinned Editor Special Circumstances forum thread in the Ask the Editors forum. If you give us this courtesy beforehand, staff will check your queues for you during your absence. This will also ensure that you will not be considered MIA and not be retired from your guide(s).

Sometimes unplanned emergencies occur, and editors might not be able to log in and process their queues. All editors must keep in mind that any unreported absences and/or any submissions left unmoderated for 7 days might garner an MIA report. If an editor has a reason why certain submissions were not cleared within the 7 day time period, they must contact staff member nilla_chelle01 as to why or else risk an MIA report. Staff can't readily guess why an editor is missing or why submissions are left in the queues. But if submissions are backlogged, and users must wait longer than a week to get their submissions processed, then it is in the best interest of the site to retire the missing editor so that another, more active user can take over. Great care and investigation goes into the decision to retire an editor based on MIA reports. As a result, once an editor is force-retired from a guide, they cannot be reinstated, and requests to revert editorships will not be honored.

An editor will receive up to 2 warnings from TV.com Staff regarding MIA status before they are retired. Any editor receiving a warning MUST respond to TV.com Staff as soon as possible with an explanation. Failure to respond within 7 days to any MIA warning will result in automatic retirement from the guide in question.

**Please do NOT post any part of an MIA editor report as a comment on this blog. It will be deleted. Thank you.
