Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Issues
I have been playing Modern Warfare 2 since a couple of days after the release because I got it from Steam. I have been playing with my buddies from the clan and several other friends since pretty much everybody got the game by now. It is a fun game; however, I am still annoyed with several issues that need to be addressed with the game and IW.net.

First, this matchmaking does not seem to be working for the player to make the experience simpler. The purpose of getting rid of dedicated servers was supposed to make it easier and more approachable to the casual player restricting the interface to a console-like experience. However, it has been completely the opposite effect. Since we are lacking dedicated servers, a player is going to be designated to host. If you are behind a router, as most people are, make sure you forward all the ports that are needed otherwise your NAT is going to be set to "Strict". If you are a casual gamer, I probably lost you already but you can see my point.

Second, the party system does not seem to work without problems. It is tedious, you have to invite everybody and for some reason some of your friends will not be able to connect to your party. It always takes a couple of tries until somebody can successfully be party leader and invite without issues.

Third, on several occasions, the player that is hosting will disconnect because he either rage quits or his connection is not good enough. At this point, it is possible someone in your party will disconnect while trying to switch to another host. Not to mention the process takes about 20 to 30 seconds in a good scenario which disrupts the flow of the game and annoys all players.

Fourth, this system was supposed to improve the cheating situation, but it has not. The first Modern Warfare had plenty of cheaters but if you usually played in a good server they were banned. As of today, I have not heard of Steam taking any action against cheaters. I have encountered my fair share of people with aim bots and wall hacks. If this situation is to continue people with just go to other games, no matter how good this game is.

In conclusion, Modern Warfare 2 is a fun game, I've had great times playing with my buddies. However, it is worth noting that IW.net needs work. It is of the utmost importance to ban and do away with cheaters. Fix all the bugs plaguing the matchmaking system or at least provide proper documentation to deal with networking issues.

The reason I haven't posted on this for over a year...

...is because I have been writing on my own website, albeit infrequently.

My PC just went AWOL!

This morning I wake up to find my PC giving me this error message:

"Load needed DLLs for Kernel."

I immediately knew that was software as it specifically mentioned DLLs, so I breathed a sigh of relief, but knew in the back of my mind that software troubleshooting is more of a PITA than hardware. I've been working on my system for 8 hours so far and haven't found a solution.

As long as I have my system up and running by Tuesday afternoon (Warhammer SE headstart!!!), I don't care how long I take.

WAAAGH!!!!

Itsy Bitsy annoying game tendencies

What seemingly unimportant details you hate in a game? Something that you may even didnt realize until someone else brings it up. The following are some examples on tendencies that I consider should be banished from any future release.

1.- Loading screens leading to....loading screens. Ninja Gaiden 2 comes to mind since its recent release.
So you are battling a typically cheap boss and get killed; You are furious and want to get back in the action right away.
You are sent to the "game over" screen, "Continue?" YES!....loading.....then you get to another screen: "Chapter 9...blah,
blah, blah....loading...........ready" Why the hell do you have to go through two loading screens?? As I said NG2 is a recent
example of several games out there that resort to multiple loading screens in a row.

2.- Crrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaawwwliiiiinnnggg death sequences.
I can accept the tradition of touching and enemy and dying instantly (what? are the henchmen suits dowsed in fast action
poison?), but once my life bars falls all the way why do I have to watch my character slowly convulsing in slow motion with
the words "YOU DIED" or "YOU ARE DEAD" or "YOU SUCK", ok, I died, I realized it when my character stopped responding to
the controller input so lets go over it and CONTINUE....dont rub it all over my face. This is specially annoying in action
intensive games when you may die repeatedly.

3.- Condescending menu options.
Press X to exit. "X" Are you sure you want to exit?. "Yes" Quitting game will lose any unsaved data. Exit? "YES!!!"

4.- Stages in a snowy environment.
I hate those damn stages... They usually make for a beautiful scenery in games that the icy context doesnt affect the
game mechanics. I know ice is slippery and since the first Mega Man games I know that running or jumping on any icy
platform will make me slide along. So games like Mario Galaxy, want to innovate? Make the ice sticky for a change!!
Wrestling the controller and trying to maintain your character on route is no fun, its a chore.

5.- Inertia.
So in the real world you cant run from 0 to 15 in 0 sec. You start running, you build up speed and equally you gradually slow
down to a halt, thatshow it works in real life. When you are playing a game, prectically all the laws of logic and reality go
directly to the thrash can. So why does my character must build speed, or slow down before stopping? Dont we have analog
controllers now? You know, push the analog stick a little so Mario moves slowly, push it harder, make him go full speed?
Usually inertia means miscalculated jumps, constant falls in lava pits and more annoying icy stages.
So if we are fighting turtles and self conscious fireballs, I think we can give physics a break, dont you?

6.- No pausing during cut scenes.
Fortunately this tendency is disappearing from high profile games. But nevertheless, a pause option should be a must in any
cut scene for any game. Murphys Law calls for a telephone to ring, a wife/girlfriend to start talking exactly during an important briefing
or a game defining moment. So in these events you usually press "start" and a)nothing happens b)you skip the cutscene.
Pause option is a must!!

Also, you reach a section of the level where there is a short cinema pointing certain area as a tip of where to go next or what do you have to do...then you get killed and restart the area, and watch the cinema again. lets say is a somewhat tricky level and you get killed again. reload and watch the cinema again...and you cant skip it. I found this predicament the scrapyard level of Force Unleashed, there were 4 cinemas, at the beginning of the area, then you kill some robots, use a switch, another cinema, retrace your steps, kill one robot, another cinema, kill the big robot, use a force power, another cinema. Jump, OOPS you miscalculated the jump or got typically blindsided by the camera and fall to your death. Cue the cinemas again.

7.- Cheap shots.
I was playing Force Unleashed and sometimes I would be hit by an explosion or a missile and get thrown on my back to the ground and during this time when I have no control over my character until the "wow! that was a hard hit, Im a little startled but Im getting back on my feet" animation, enemy fire will still lower my health.
I consider it to be far beyond cheap getting punished while not having control of your character. Im not asking for a blinking invincible time after being hit, just to let my skill determine if I get hit or not. Lost Planet has this problem also....its far more annoying since you are fighting gigantic insect that stomp the ground and send you flying too often. You are on your back start to get up, take and step and *thud* there you go again then suddenly you are dead.

Thats what comes to my mind right now. What annoys you?

My new toy

My new toy is a 2006 Yamaha FZ6, this thing is a death machine.

The previous owner installed some nice mods, such as a Two Brothers exhaust, PowerCommanderIII, frame sliders, tinted windscreen, and a fender eliminator kit.

TV Theme Song of the Day #6

Hey all it's been awhile (a couple of years!), but CrazyRalph's Crazy Journal brings you back from the dead:

TV Theme Song of the Day!

So after a long hiatus, a specific theme song has been in my head for awhile. Hopefully by displaying the lyrics you will all get a bit of nostalgia and sing along! This Nickelodeon TV show aired from 1989-1991, with reruns running several years after. A great TV show that brings back great memories! Well here it is....

#6 - Hey Dude

It's a little wild and a little strange.
To make your home out on the range.
Mount your horse and come along.
Cause you can't get a ride if you can't hold on.

Singin': Yippie ki yi yay, yippie ki yi what?
Like the cowboys sing: Yippie ki yi yay.
Get along little doggie 'til the break of day.

Better watch out for these man-eating jackrabbits and that killer cacti
Hey Dude!

well... maybe i'll stay then... with some pretty cool news too!

i'll just switch between the two profiles

anyways, you guys know about the music videos i make. those 24, Kiefer and MGS ones. well i got this message from someone on youtube today;

Hi, Mel ~

I'm Jennifer, the web designer and webmistress at Corey Feldman's official NEW website, http://www.coreyfeldman.net./ The old coreyfeldman.COM is no longer his official site; it was snagged by a cybersquatter when the domain name lapsed by accident.

We saw your video on YouTube and really liked it! Your creativity in editing video and music together is original and inventive. We'd like to present it on Corey's website, with appropriate credit to you (either your real name or screen name).

As you may have heard, YouTube and other video sites are assailed on all sides with those who would like someone to pay for uploading videos. We all know where this is heading. So we want to make sure your video doesn't disappear into thin air if YouTube is forced to take down a lot of content.

If you're willing, we'd like you to mail (or email) us a DVD of your LOST BOYS tribute video at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK76Iv_4a4I

We have some YouTube videos presented on our site, such as trailers for Corey's movies, but some are fuzzy. If you have a good, clean version of one of Corey's trailers, we'd sure like to get better copies of those. Also, if you have any videos of Corey in concert, interview or appearance clips, McDonald's commercial and anything else you'd like to
share, we'd like to post them on the website.

Please e-mail me back with your okay, and I'll send you our mailing address.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lac Kamp

the videos been uploaded and sent to her of course

Travels into the dark recesses of gaming: PC Racing Sims
In this type of post I hope to go over the types of games that are truely hardcore.......or truely weird, or truely unique, doesn't really matter.

Racing games = not for PC's

These things have been said to someone who had the gall to say that a PC race sim (GTR 2 in this case) might have been on equal terms to those 2 legendary rivals Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo, to the console folks and the mainstream gamer crowd that there would be anyone willing to use a PC to race.

Oh how wrong they are.

The Scandnavian Raceway, Anderstorp Sweden, I take a Maserati MC12 out on a dry run around the course after pitting out I hit the gas, while doing so I congratule myself on figuring out how to make the formerly ps2 only Logitech Driving Force Pro work on my computer, saving me the need to buy the 300 dollar G2....oh crap the straightaway is already over? I start using my GT honed technique, only it doesn't work, face it you are not going to make a turn that you would normally use 2nd gear on when you are still in 5th. I slam into a tire wall and my hood flies off, not to worry I think, I should be able to keep going until I reach the pits, only thing is the car won't budge now, yep a 750,000 dollar car, ruined....good going Mike, I get a radio communication asking if I am alright and that emergency personell are on the way, of course I'm alright, its my ego that is hurt. At least the car didn't explode.....And thus ened my first experience with GTR 2

It is a bit more difficult to find those to whom PC race sims cater to, largely for the most part these folks aren't from around here. Unlike console games where a lot of games are universally popular round the world, PC games are more focused on regional likes, PC games that are popular here may not have an audience in Asia and vice versa. Perhaps the reason why the console guys have such a notion is that PC race sims are simply more popular elsewhere. PC racers are for the most part, based in Europe, that's why many of these racing sims use European tracks, and use European cars and until recently used European DRM (Starforce, ick). These the guys who like these games are much more involved with the sims, complaining how Sim Bin messed up the tire model for the game, going over various racing mumbo jumbo that would fly over most peoples heads, getting tips and building thier own steering rigs and so forth. However one thing they all have is a revulsion for both Forza and GT, why? Well when you listen to their reasons you will have to also have to notice how unrealistic the console driving sims really are.

In console race sims realism isn't actually realism per se, actually it is the manufacturer's definition of realism, where everything is pretty and shiny and those cars are like the freaking energizer bunny; they keep going and going and going no matter how matter punishment they get. For the companies that make Forza and GT it is a constant struggle to make things more real, apparently Chris Lee's, the Group Product Manager for Forza, definition of 'getting away with quite a bit' was having things like bumpers fall off and such. It's hard to not be incredulous to GT's claim of being a 'Real Driving Simulator' where you can bumper car your way to victory regardless if you stay on the track or not.

Not so with the PC racers, which usually are licensed by the competitions themselves which gives the developer much more leverage with the manufacturers. "Oh so you don't want your car to explode if it hits a wall at 200 miles an hour? Well your car won't be used in real races anymore, how's that?" The cars explode, pplz.

Another difference is the way is how one does car analysis so you can better tune your car to the track, Gran Turismo gives you a few graphs showing your performance and that is pretty much it, this is what GTR 2 gives you.

And there are 9 more tabs where this came from!

Anyway I can wax poetic all night about this, but I think this should be enough for now. Just remember to take the gaming road less traveled, for that will make all the difference.

PC GAMING a new start

Well I have finally gotten a new PC.  What can I say, now (for awhile at least) I will be able to play every PC game out there.  My new computer has the following:

Dual Processor, each at 2.8ghz

256 MB ATI graphics card

1 GB DDR RAM

80 GB Hard drive

Plus other stuff which no one cares about, I am just glad my games will all run fine.

It's been a long time since my last journal, but how do you guys like my Union?

I have changed the Portable Gaming Network to the Gaming and Design Network. I wanted to do this so the forum wouldn't be so limited as far as what conversations could go on within it. Also, I did this to help people get more involved in making games, weather they are interested or have been making them already. It's kind of like a link between designers and gamers. Poeple can even submit their games to be downloaded in the download database in the Union. Well, if you want, click the link below and tell me what you guys think of it so far.

E3 is just around the corner!
I'm super excited about this year's E3. I really hope that I'll be able to attend at least one E3 in my lifetime, but until then, I'll just stick with GameSpot and their best-of-the-industry coverage of games. Judging by what I see from the Stupid Pants Operation: GameSpot at E3 2004, E3 seems to be very fun, hectic, and terrifying at the same time. Like stated earlier, I'm super excited about E3. I, from the bottom of my heart, hope that one day, I'll be able to work at GameSpot and attend these press conferences and such myself. Wait, I'm getting off-topic here. I'll save that for my next entry. So...yeah, E3 is going to rock this year!

Digital Distribution vs Going to the store: No contest
Tommorrow I'll be picking up my first WW2 game since BF 42 months ago and I'm not sure what's cooler that i'm getting the game or that I'm getting it digitally. It's pretty nice not to have a extra box and more trash to take up very rare space at my apartment. My Preorder bonus was the original Splinter Cell which i've already played on the xbox but the PC version is so much better with the quick saves making for a great deal less frustrating gameplay.

But back to the main point digital distribution is the wave of the future. I mean seriously why should you have to go out to the store to get data. I mean that's what you're doing when you go out to the store and buy a cd or a game you're going out and acquiring data. I buy all my music via Itunes nowadays, I go online buy a single song and it's mine. Every so often I back these up in case of emergencies to a CD.

Games are even better, my first experience with this was Steam for HL 2, it went all smooth and perfect, I had the game as soon as it was available in stores and was playing it the next day. My Second experience with this was splinter cell just the other day, i downloaded it, surprisingly quickly. It was ready, it was there, it played well, no trash to take out, no boxes and cds to store no cd keys to worry about. Furthermore I backed up the installer but even had I not, i'd be able to download it again from anywhere.

Now I know some you aren't ready for this, maybe you'll never be ready some of you like the experience of going out to the store and buying a box and getting a bunch of stuff that I never even look twice at generally. I'm not against all games being released to stores for as long as people keep buying them. I however would much prefer to just download my data. I've bought more music since I got ITunes then i'd bougght in two years before that because it's simple it's conveniant and it's just cooler than taking a big long trip out of the house to a music store and putting up with the jackal behind the counter. If publishers put huge swaths of their catalogues up on the net for sale I surmise that you'd get more sales that you're missing out on for a variety of reasons at the store.
