Bob Johnson
Bob Johnson and Peter Knight had played together as a guitar/fiddle duo in England's folk clubs for several years, when Knight was plucked out of relative obscurity in 1970 and offered a spot in Steeleye Span (Mark II) as their resident fiddle-player. After two albums, Steeleye guitarist Martin Carthy exited, which led to Johnson's being recruited as his replacement. Johnson's skills on the electric guitar extended beyond folk music, into rock music, and driven by his and Rick Kemp's bass playing (Kemp having replaced Ashley Hutchings), Steeleye became an international success, and the pre-eminent folk-rock outfit of the mid-1970's.
Johnson and Knight chose to leave the group in 1977, following the release of Rocket Cottage, in order to produce and record a concept album, The King of Elfland's Daughter, based on a book by Lord Dunsany. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
