It's all about respect...who earns it, Nelly or fellow St. Louis native Chingy?

Every day it seems we read about yet another conflict going on between some of our favorite artists. Recently, hip-hop artists have been the focus of such rivalries. That's right kids, there is a plethora of beefs going on right now within the hip-hop community. There are so many that even the most rabid hip-hop fan may be confused as to who hates whom, who reconciled with whom, who was not mad but now is, who is mad but can't remember why, and who is not mad but thinks they probably should be, and so on and so forth. To help guide you through at least one of these squabbles, we've laid out the dispute between Nelly and Chingy. We give you the play by play below.

Chingy was initially upset over a lyric coming from a track called "Another One" from Nelly's 2004 release Sweat, which he felt was directed at him. The line is as follows: "I like it how you do it right thurr [there]/You just to remember why you do that right thurr. I made it tight to be country/ They thought country was bummy/ Till country start making money." Regarding this rhyme and Chingy, Nelly states, "That is all the truth and I am like 'I am not lying to you, little guy.' I could have said "F**k that right thurr."

Chingy's ultimate response to the rhyme was that Nelly spouted it off due to jealousy. Chingy opened up to MTV regarding his beef with Nelly, saying, "I'm tired of these guys--I'm talking about Ludacris and Nelly--I'm tired of these guys taking shots at me in all these interviews and songs [with] subliminal shots. Business is business. I'm the one who sold three million records, and I'm still getting money back that [Disturbing tha Peace] had in their possession. Ludacris knows what I'm talking about."

When Nelly then heard about Chingy's dis track "We Got," he questioned Chingy's motives and claimed that the rapper had many opportunities to discuss any issues he had with him. In an interview with AllHipHop.com Nelly states, "[I saw him] at the Radio Music Awards [in Las Vegas]. My album came out in September. The awards were in October. My album was [bootlegged] even earlier in St. Louis. So he had plenty of time to hear that and I am sure people brought it to his attention, so if he had a problem he could have said it face to face."

In response to the line in "Another One," Chingy released the track "We Got." The remarks in particular that are eating at Nelly are: "I heard that song, boy; it ain't another, boy. Better keep my name out your mouth, boy/ ... I been discovered, boy; that's why you hatin', boy/ ... The media hyped you, boy/ KRS crushed you, boy/ ... Put up the chains, bars and the platinum teeth, boy/ And bring the drama beef, trouble to the streets, boy/ You started it, boy/ Well, I'mma finish, boy."

Nelly's gripe with Chingy not only includes the spoken word, but also the written word. Chingy was interviewed by the print magazine XXL and what Nelly took from the interaction was that Chingy stated he didn't owe Nelly anything and he didn't help to pave his way for success in the hip-hop community. To this Nelly says, "For me to hear him say that I have nothing to do with his success coming out of St. Louis--I am not asking him to say thanks to Nelly, don't be corny, but when you're in the magazine saying, 'Nelly didn't have nothing to do with me coming out from St. Louis.' So I was like, 'That is cool, if that is how you want to look at it.'"

To Nelly's chagrin, Chingy continued to hold up his defense in the interview, stating, "I been rapping just as long, dude, flat out. So by Nelly saying that ... I just feel like he shouldn't have said that ... He was threatened by me and I felt disrespected by that because I never said nothing to dude. How you gonna feel threatened when you got millions and millions and you sold millions of records? Do you, and let me do me."

When Chingy initially left Disturbing tha Peace, he had spoken out against the group, stating he had financial disputes with co-owner and manager Chaka Zulu. Unfortunately, he announced this in XXL and apparently not to Ludacris and company. Ludacris told MTV, "This is the first time we hear about his accusations, in a tabloid or through different media outlets, so all respect is lost." Luda also dismisses the fact that he may be jealous of the rapper, due to record sales beating his own Chicken -N- Beer. "So basically what I'm trying to say is, I'm happy as hell! Of course I'm getting the cut off [of all this], so how am I not going to be happy about this?"

Leaving Disturbing tha Peace, Chingy pointed out troubles with the management and overall jealousy. Convinced that since his first album fared better than Luda's Chicken -N- Beer, Ludacris would bow to jealousy and not want Chingy to be more successful than him. Chingy feared he would not get the treatment and the room to grow that he deserved and rightfully earned. "I started my own label, Slot-A-Lot records," he said. "And I had a crew who I wanted to push too. I wasn't really doing that. I don't want to stay down here. I'm trying to grow. I'm trying to elevate, so I'm trying to kick things off."

Nelly purports that he's used to people coming at him with negativity, but this time it hit so close to home, literally, as the two artists come from the same hometown of St. Louis. "I have to [reply], I am still a rapper first--I can show you contrary to rumor. He is not the first one to take shots at me. But this one affects me on a personal level because he is from St. Louis and this is a different relationship. Had this been any other rapper, I would have brushed it off and kept it moving."

C

If recent sentiments from Chingy are true, this beef could soon be over, at least on his end of things. In an interview with MTV, Chingy expressed the desire to just get on with his career, "I ain't hiding from it no more," Chingy said. "I ain't with all this foolishness, but if you gonna make songs about me and speaking about me in these interviews, I'm not gonna hide in no shell. At the end of the day, they spitting false talk and this is real talk. I ain't got nothing too much more to say about those guys. I'm trying do my thing with my music and my company and keep things moving. I'm done with all that bullcrap. I'mma shut it down right now."
