Veteran tenor saxophonist Budd Johnson (who first emerged 50 years before this recording) was still in fine form when he met up with altoist Phil Woods for this frequently heated quintet session. During what would be his final recording date (he died later in 1984), Johnson is excellent on the ballads but even better on the faster material, where his interplay and tradeoffs with Woods are a constant joy.
