During an era when there were many "Jazz Plays Broadway" albums, trumpeter Yank Lawson decided to perform a dozen songs from a variety of musicals rather than just sticking to one score. A few of the numbers on this set are from decades before, including "Makin' Whoopee," "Stormy Weather" and "My Man," while others on the LP are taken from such then-recent shows as Can Can, Gypsy, My Fair Lady and The King and I. Yank always sounds fine, and on this set, he has an excellent supporting cast (clarinetist Bill Stegmeyer, Bud Freeman on tenor, pianist Lou Stein, bassist Jack Lesberg and drummer Cliff Leeman). However, the brevity of the performances (none longer than 3:14) cuts down on the spontaneity, and since the melodies are played with respect, no real surprises occur.
