The Playmates' one big hit was the 1958 novelty "Beep Beep," about the little Nash Rambler that a Cadillac couldn't outrun. The group enjoyed ten hits through 1962, all but one of which are included on this succinct 12-song anthology. "What Is Love?" and "Jo-Ann" were the only other Top 20 entries for the Playmates, but their Roulette recordings are consistently fun, if ephemeral, slices of teen-oriented silliness and balladry. Their vocal harmonies and tendency toward humorous material invite comparisons to the Four Preps, but the Playmates had their own identity and, at times, a delightfully perverse sense of humor.
