His name is Eric Leeds and he is funky, at least some of the time, on the intriguing and eclectic yet often maddening Things Left Unsaid--his second WB project. Having toured with the enigmatic Prince for years, Leeds has picked up many of The Artist's habits, both good and self indulgent. Despite moments of hot funk, this disc is all over the place, hitting on fusion, then world beat, then soul, finally Latin. With better overall melodic conception, the hodgepodge might work, but some outstanding playing (y Leeds and the likes of Gil Goldstein, Alex Acuna and Ricky Peterson) gets lost in tangents that are simply too meandering to stay interesting. Leeds' blowing on all horns (including baritone) and flute is always splashy, and Goldstein's production technique of texturing them together brings the disc's few golden moments alive ("Isla Mujeres," for instance). But to get to anything remotely interesting, there's a lot of well intentioned overly artsy mud to wade through.
