Johnny Mathis' All-Time Greatest Hits, a 20-track double-LP set released in 1972, was the most comprehensive compilation of the singer's best-known material up to its time. With the 11-track 1958 album Johnny's Greatest Hits the "greatest hits" concept was invented, and Columbia Records followed with More Johnny's Greatest Hits in 1959 and Johnny's Newest Hits in 1963. Mathis hadn't made much of an impression on the singles charts since, but in 1969 he returned with "Love Theme from 'Romeo and Juliet,'" which grazed the pop charts and hit the Top Ten on easy-listening charts. That song is the concluding track here; otherwise, most of his initial hits from the late '50s -- such as "It's Not for Me to Say," "Chances Are," and "The Twelfth of Never" -- are included, along with early-'60s hits like "Gina" and "What Will Mary Say?" and late-'60s easy-listening chart entries like "Venus" and "Misty Roses." Toward the end of the set, there are some non-hits from the early '70s.
