The title track sums up this Texas-based singer/songwriter's strengths perfectly: a sweet, smoky alto voice, a gentle way with an emotionally heavy lyric, and a knack for melodies that stick in your head for days. The other originals are just as good: "Time Is Funny That Way" is a soft and tuneful poke in the eye to the man who's dumping her, while "All You Could Say" and "Not to Mention My Broken Heart" are a bit more straightforwardly despairing. For uplift she turns to other writers, including John Prine ("Somewhere Someone's Falling In Love") and Greg Trooper and Tom Russell, whose gloppy "The Heart" is the only serious misstep on this album. The best cover version is her rendition of Boudleaux Bryant's classic "Love Hurts," which she delivers with the perfect combination of ache and resignation. The only pervasive problem here is one of incompetent production: the crystalline acoustic-rock arrangements and Campbell's voice are blurry around the edges and unpleasantly saturated whenever the volume rises.
