When the A-Bones first started out, their bass player was the esteemed Mike Lewis, and when the band cut their debut EP, Tempo Tantrum, one could hardly blame them for figuring the guy in the band who had played in DMZ and the Lyres would be the one to turn to for production decisions. However, while Lewis may be a great bass player with a solid résumé, he wasn't much of a producer, and Tempo Tantrum is a bit too clean and tidy to suit this band's raucous nature. The A-Bones sound rather meek by their own standards here, lacking the raunchy blare of their best studio work, and the much of the time the vocals really miss the mark. But the four tunes on deck are good ones, Bruce Bennett's guitar work shines through, and despite its flaws there's lots of fun to be had in Tempo Tantrum; it certainly stakes out the territory the A-Bones would follow in the future, and that means it's suitable for your next party. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide [-] Collapse
