In the Hand of the Inevitable alternates tracks residing on the more polished end of jazz-funk with diva vamps -- on "Free Your Mind" and "Let's Get Together" -- more akin to house music. As on most of Taylor's previous albums, there's a lack of risk-taking that often relegates the tracks to the status of background music, but the mood throughout is pleasant enough.
