One of the better sounding Runaways bootlegs that surfaced in the late 1970s was Live in Concert, which was recorded at the Starwood in West Hollywood, CA on September 13, 1976. The sound is decent by 1976 standards; Live in Concert is probably a soundboard recording, and it definitely captures the band's vitality. At that point, the Runaways were among the freshest sounding, most cutting-edge bands in rock. Hearing five teen-age girls playing hard rock/heavy metal was hardly the norm back then, but the Runaways were far from being a novelty; when they rip into pearls like "Cherry Bomb," "You Drive Me Wild," and "Is It Day or Night?," it's clear that Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West could be every bit as gritty, forceful, and in-your-face as any of the male rockers of the era. The LP's primary emphasis is on material from the Runaways' self-titled debut album of 1976, although a few gems from 1977's Queens of Noise (which had yet to be released) are also performed, including "Take It or Leave It" and "Johnny Guitar."
