Singer Jimmy Rushing's two albums for BluesWay have been reissued in full on this British double-LP from 1986. Although recorded near the end of Rushing's life, he still sounds strong on the set of blues, ballads and swinging material. The first album finds Rushing joined by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra (which includes flugelhornist Clark Terry and trombonist Dicky Wells), while the other has a septet that includes Wells, tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate and pianist Dave Frishberg, plus a slightly funky studio rhythm section. Both combinations work well, and Rushing shows plenty of spirit throughout the performances (most of which have not yet been reissued on CD).
