In Iranian music, as for most music from all around Middle-East and Central Asia, improvisation plays an important part. Iranian improvisation is based on melodic models (called "gushe") that are arranged into twelve specific groups or "Dastgahs" (i.e. systems). Each of the Dastgah has its own modal character which is presented in the initial "gushe" of the improvisation. But the modal character will gradually evolve depending of the gushes used during the performance. The improvisation has segments, the first of which is an instrumental metric composition. The other segments will used non-metric improvisations, ending the improvisation by a metric one. This CD presents four of the foremost Iranian traditional musicians, performing on typical instruments, while the singer used a traditional type of singer that is the most mesmerizing.
