Daniel Davis' third album, I Know A Place, is a breakthrough. For the first time, he's been able to convey the raw energy of his concerts on a recording and that frisky spark gives more dimension to his music. The material on the album remains inconsistent, however. Even though he has written several of the record's songs, Davis hasn't assembled a thoroughly winning collection of songs -- he's merely chosen a few enjoyable numbers. Nevertheless, I Know A Place is his best album because the quality of the performance makes the weakness of the material less noticeable. And when he does have a good song, the music is simply top-drawer contemporary honky tonk.
