The first Vigilantes of Love album on the Warner Brothers label is a retrospective of their first five CDs, which featured five different band lineups. Fittingly, singer-songwriter Bill Mallonee has recorded four new songs for the compilation with yet another new band. With the exception of the rock-hymn "Double Cure," the new songs are the least interesting -- tuneful enough, but arranged blandly with familiar classic rock riffs. However, producer Dan Russell has made some excellent selections from the Vigilantes' past: the disc wisely focuses on Mallonee's pointedly poignant acoustic songs, and skips the juvenelia of his weakest album, Driving The Nails, altogether. V.O.L. is an excellent introduction to Mallonee's music.
