The fifth of five CDs in this series by the budget label Laserlight differs from the first four in that it spans 16 years in pianist/singer Nat King Cole's career. He is heard with his original trio (which included guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Wesley Prince) on six selections from 1940-41 and with his 1949 quartet (which had Jack Constanzo on congas) for "I Used to Love You." In addition, there are four numbers with Cole's wartime trio and four others from the mid-'50s taken from either The Dorsey Brothers TV show or Cole's own program. Throughout, the emphasis is on his brilliant swing piano rather than his vocals (although there are a generous amount of the latter), making this a series of great interest to jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide [-] Collapse
