According to composer Elliot Goldenthal, his score for the 1994 baseball biopic Cobb pivots on the concept of "composition as collision" -- in other words, the music embraces myriad styles and sensibilities in an effort to communicate the contradictions that form the larger-than-life persona that is Ty Cobb, Hall of Fame baseball player and world-class S.O.B. What could have amounted to little more than a giant mess is in fact Goldenthal's most sophisticated and ambitious score to date, moving with authority from gospel hymns to ragtime to stirring orchestral passages.
