Critic's Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
The recordings of Washboard Sam are consistently fun, emphasizing good-time music and swinging playing. The performances fall between blues and 1930s jazz. Even if there is a certain sameness to some of the records (Washboard Sam recorded a great deal), one never gets bored with the happy sounds. On Vol. 3 in this seven-CD series, he is heard on three recording dates from 1938. The supporting cast often includes trumpeter Herb Morand, pianist Black Bob, and guitarist Big Bill Broonzy. George Barnes' electric guitar spots (which preceded Charlie Christian on record by a year) are a major asset on three of the songs from the first session. Fun music.
