In the '70s, an offshoot of reggae called lovers rock had a brief moment in the spotlight. Infusing roots reggae with a big dose of the smoother side of American R&B, lovers rock was marketed largely toward teenage girls who found the likes of Bob Marley or Peter Tosh too forbidding. Keely B's Zoned Out is kind of the dancehall equivalent to lovers rock: anyone who likes the electronic textures and danceable rhythms of dancehall and ragga but is put off by thuggish "slack" lyrics and gangsta-style posturing might find the suavely romantic Zoned Out more to their liking. Keely B has a smooth tenor voice and a bedroom-eyes delivery, and the songs are mostly mid-tempo love jams like "Get Away" and "Tease Me." He's slightly less believable on party-oriented tracks like "Hype Up," and the remake of "California Dreamin'" is just an odd idea, but overall, Zoned Out is an appealing piece of soul-tinged reggae. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide [-] Collapse
