From the Heart is a bit of a melancholic record -- not because of the track listing or performances contained herein, but stemming largely from the fact that founding member Obie Benson passed away during the production of this disc. Historical and external circumstances aside, this is an all-star tribute to one of Motown's crown jewels. Guest appearances from such Detroit soul luminaries as Aretha Franklin, Ashford & Simpson, Dennis Edwards, and Mary Wilson make this anniversary tribute much sweeter than it would have been if it were only the Four Tops playing all of the hits live. And the group is still in lively form, churning out hit after hit with the machine-like accuracy that Berry Gordy implanted in the Tops' souls nearly half a century ago. Every chart-topping song is here, and there's simply no room for paltry filler anywhere. The guys sound fantastic, and the crowd most certainly adds to the lively energy of this disc. Die-hard Motown fans will no doubt enjoy this disc, a fine celebration featuring the music of one of the greatest soul groups of all time.
