4.0 out of 5 stars Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Most soundtracks that utilize jazz do not stand apart from their films, consisting of two or three themes and sounding incomplete by themselves without the visual element. Bob Belden's Three Days of Rain is an exception, for one does not need to see the film to enjoy this recording. While the emphasis is on ballads and mood pieces, and there are a few short sketches, there are also a few midtempo romps. Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano (who takes the relatively laid-back "Panic" unaccompanied) is the main instrumental voice, with his tone sounding cool in a 1950s West Coast vein. Trumpeter Scott Wendholt, pianist Kevin Hays, and guitarist Al Street are also key players on this relaxing and thoughtful set of melodic and lyrical music.
