An Introduction to Coleman Hawkins - FUEL 2000 by
Coleman Hawkins!
Critic's Review
Al Campbell, All Music Guide
As part of Fuel 2000's Introduction series, tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins is spotlighted on 15 tracks recorded between 1935 and 1964. This set is aimed at the casual listener and includes a balanced mixture of originals and standards such as "Stardust," "How Deep Is the Ocean," "Indian Summer," and "Loverman/Stella by Starlight." While Hawkins is the featured soloist on all of these cuts, his jamming partners are of the highest caliber and include Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Earl Hines, Harry "Sweets" Edison Buck Clayton, and Benny Carter, among many others. From small combos to his short-lived big band, An Introduction to Coleman Hawkins is a tasteful sampler.
