Zigzag/The Supercops - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK by
Oliver Nelson!
Critic's Review
Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
The little-known Zigzag remains one of the most engaging and innovative thriller scores of the early '70s -- the zenith of Oliver Nelson's exploration of percussion and rhythm in an original score, its energy and drama perfectly capture the intensity of the suspense genre. Recalling vintage jazz in both its atmosphere and vigor, the music navigates though a series of mood and tempo shifts with the precision of a race car moving in and out of traffic -- Nelson does a particularly strong job of evoking the grittiness of the urban setting. Film Score Monthly's lavish two-disc reissue includes both the original soundstage sessions as well as subsequent re-recordings designed for LP release. The package also includes 17 minutes of vocal performances headlined by Anita O'Day, and an additional hour-plus of material composed by Jerry Fielding for the films The Supercops and The Outfit.
