Sweet Soul Music is a two-fer without the title. These 15 songs originally made up the Chi-Lites' two 20th Century Fox albums: Heavenly Body (1980) and Me & You (1981). A down period, the only song that made a significant chart showing was the herky-jerky, hiccupping "Hot on a Thing (Called Love)." Overall, the product was good; however, the commitment to promoting on a grand scale just wasn't there. And if "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl" sound different, it's because they are; as with Gene Chandler, who also recorded for 20th Century, producer Carl Davis updated one of the artists' classics on each album. Each is extended time-wise from the original million-sellers. A good buy for the Chi-Lites' completist -- all six of their 20th Century Fox singles' are included, including B-sides.
