The third release from the New Zealand quartet Hoi Polloi is a sonically engaging album driven by the powerful vocals of Jenny Gullen. While the band gained notice as a Christian band, like many acts in the genre, that angle is played down in the lyrics. Hoi Polloi actually fits comfortably aside other '90s alternative rock bands like the Cranberries or No Doubt (minus the ska influence). The tumbling, chaotic, sonic charge of "Tiptoe" opens the record and is one of the strongest tracks. Other highlights are the creepy slink of "Falling Down" and the pretty, understated "Love Has Come." For all its merits, Happy Ever After doesn't resonate. Some of the lyrics are rather slight ("Smile," for example) and the songs rarely possess a gripping hook.
