This is an ambitious and laudatory effort from K-Tel Records. While most of that label's releases in the Celtic music field centered on the new agey and commercially trendy sector of Celtic music (Altan, Clannad, Phil Coulter, et al.) and failed to represent the artists' body of work properly, this Horslips release actually paints a historically clear picture of this influential Irish band. With the exception of their mid-'70s Christmas release, Drive the Cold Winter Away, all of their studio albums are acknowledged with at least one track. And in the case of Book of Invasions: A Celtic Symphony, four tracks are included, which is apropos since that is arguably their crowning achievement. Their final release, the live Belfast Gigs, is also not recognized in this collection, but given the accelerated demise of the band and the inferior quality of that album, it's an understandable omission. Still, 12 tracks from a band whose career lasted ten years and a dozen releases doesn't fully tell the story, but when compared with the other haphazard Celtic Collections releases by K-Tel, this is the stuff of doctoral theses. ~ Dave Sleger, All Music Guide [-] Collapse
