Duke of Earl: 23 Greatest Hits by Gene Chandler!

Critic's Review

4.5 out of 5 stars Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
Gene Chandler exploded on the '60s soul scene with "Duke of Earl," and a brilliant piece of novelty/love song material. His hit singles could be formulaic, but Chandler's expressive, haunting voice never failed to lift a trite lyric or punctuate a great one. This 23-cut set contains many songs previously available only as singles, and mixes the requisite hits with nicely done obscurities like "London Town," "Day to Day," and "Baby, That's Love." This isn't the complete Gene Chandler output, but it's certainly got most of his prime early numbers and lots of smashes.
