Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
The first of two Hep LPs reissuing all of bandleader Andy Kirk's early recordings has been largely superceded by a Classics CD, although the latter skips over the occasional alternate takes. Kirk's 1929 orchestra was most notable for its spirited ensembles, fine lead work by John Williams on alto and baritone, and solo spots for violinist Claude Williams and pianist Mary Lou Williams (who also provided most of the arrangements). The 14 numbers on this album include two versions of "Blue Clarinet Stomp," a hot small-group number featuring clarinetist John Harrington, John Williams and Claude Williams. On that selection, Kirk (who doubled during the era on tuba and bass sax) can actually be heard for a change.
