This unusual double disc pairs performances of the same two Schubert works as performed by pianist Badura-Skoda over the course of 40 years. "The Trout," originally recorded by Badura-Skoda in 1950, is most notable for the poor, "underwater" sound quality. But the 1997 recording with a young string quartet is crisp and vital, with a rich performance by Badura-Skoda. This is partly a case of experience and wisdom improving artistic interpretation. While all performances are outstanding, the pairing is only interesting for serious Schubert enthusiasts.
