French rapper MC Solaar spends his self-titled album showcasing exactly why he was instantly championed by the hip-hop community as an international talent. From the jazzy, trip-hop-like beats courtesy of producers Zdar, Boom Bass, and Evil D to Solaar's lucid flow, this is quality hip-hop without any major flaws. Of course, it's a bit of a frustrating listen if you don't know French, since you'll have no clue about what he's rapping about, but the way Solaar's words slide off his tongue makes it enjoyable nonetheless. On par with his best work of the '90s, this self-titled album may arguably be his most impressive, as it's uniform laid-back feel makes it a consistent and sutured listen. Few producers in the American hip-hop scene can parallel this album's mellow qualities.
