As infectious and perfect a pop song as anyone has created in the last quarter century, "Hey, Hey Girl" is a virtual primer in the art of the single. Two minutes and change of candyfloss vocals, roller-rink organ, and hip-shakin' drums, it's monumental and completely immaterial at the same time -- its brilliance is its simplicity, and it divines poetry from the nonsensical. That could be said of a lot of great singles, mind you, and to be certain, "Hey, Hey Girl" breaks no new ground -- if anything, its immediate familiarity is the key to its charm, and it's bound to bring to mind innumerable other pop songs. That all of them are undeniably brilliant as well shouldn't be overlooked.
