Aphasia's Mesospheric Breaks is accurately described on the album's sleeve as a collection of "oblique soundscapes": nine abstract, atmospheric electronic compositions with shifting, darting beats and morphing, metallic synths. The effect of the nine pieces -- known only by their lengths -- is both lulling and energizing, creating and resolving tension as each song grows and twists like a fractal. "04_26" opens the album with ambient synths and twitching percussion, then switches to an electro-tribal beat which doubles and decays, while "06_30" eviscerates a hip-hop rhythm, stretching it out and layering it until it's distorted into a funhouse mirror version of itself.

The album becomes more organic and ambient as it progresses; "10_39," Mesospheric Breaks' centerpiece, opens with a radiant wash of synths as different, subdued rhythms shift beneath it like undercurrents, then segues into rippling water and static, as if the song were short-circuiting. "05_37" creates what sounds like an electronic rain forest, with various hissing, gurgling, and chirping synths surrounded by water sounds and atmospheric background noises.
