Glenn Spearman's early death in 1998 left the jazz world with one of its rising stars at the peak of his powers. Fortunately, his legacy was preserved in some his outstanding recordings, including this duo with collaborator, percussionist John Heward. Although this CD was not released until nearly nine years after it was made, it is a significant part of the saxophonist's discography in that it reveals his clear debt to fellow saxophonist Frank Wright and offers the chance to hear Spearman develop long solos with minimal distraction. The music reaches to the heavens, with warm, sweeping tones, powerful and emotional thrusts, and exultant, energetic statements. There is a range of emotion presented, and Heward proves a perfect match on percussion, with sensitive support throughout.
